Simulation: Definition

Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time using a model. A model represents the key characteristics of the system, while the simulation represents how the system operates over time. Simulation is used in technology, safety engineering, training, education, and video games to gain insight into how systems function or to show the effects of alternative scenarios. It allows studying systems without building them, performing experiments in a low-cost and low-risk environment, and analyzing "what if" scenarios. Major advantages of simulation include gaining insights into models, studying system behavior without building the real system, performing accurate experiments, and identifying unexpected phenomena.

SIMULATION

Definition: Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world

process or system over time. The act of simulating something first requires
that a model be developed; this model represents the key characteristics or
behaviors/functions of the selected physical or abstract system or process.
The model represents the system itself, whereas the simulation represents
the operation of the system over time.

Uses: Simulation is used in many contexts, such as simulation of technology

for performance optimization, safety engineering, testing, training,
education, and video games. Simulation is also used with scientific modeling
of natural systems or human systems to gain insight into their functioning.
Simulation can be used to show the eventual real effects of alternative
conditions and courses of action. Simulation is also used when the real
system cannot be engaged, because it may not be accessible, or it may be
dangerous or unacceptable to engage, or it is being designed but not yet
built, or it may simply not exist.
Classification of simulation: Simulation is classified as follow
Physical simulation refers to simulation in which physical objects are
substituted for the real thing. These physical objects are often chosen
because they are smaller or cheaper than the actual object or system.
Interactive simulation is a special kind of physical simulation, in which
physical simulations include human operators, such as in a flight simulator or
a driving simulator.
Computer simulation: A computer simulation is an attempt to model a
real-life or hypothetical situation on a computer so that it can be studied to
see how the system works. By changing variables in the simulation,
predictions may be made about the behaviour of the system. It is a tool to
virtually investigate the behaviour of the system under study.

Computer simulation has become a useful part of modeling many natural

systems in physics, chemistry and biology, and human systems in economics
and social science as well as in engineering to gain insight into the operation
of those systems. A good example of the usefulness of using computers to
simulate can be found in the field of network traffic simulation. In such
simulations, the model behaviour will change each simulation according to
the set of initial parameters assumed for the environment.

ADVANTAGE
Major advantages of simulation are:
1. One advantage of simulation is the ability to gain insights gain into the
model solution which may be impossible to attain through other
techniques. Also, once the simulation has been developed, it provides
a convenient experimental laboratory to perform sensitivity analysis.
2. Helps to study the behavior of a system without building it.
3. Its results are accurate in general, compared to analytical model.
4. Help to find un-expected phenomenon, behavior of the system.
5. Easy to perform ``What-If'' analysis.
6. One of the primary advantages of simulators is that they are able to

provide users with practical feedback when designing real world

systems. This allows the designer to determine the correctness and
efficiency of a design before the system is actually constructed.
Consequently, the user may explore the merits of alternative designs
without actually physically building the systems.

7. Another benefit of simulators is that they permit system designers to

study a problem at several different levels of abstraction. By
approaching a system at a higher level of abstraction, the designer is
better able to understand the behaviours and interactions of all the

high level components within the system and is therefore better

equipped to counteract the complexity of the overall system.

8. Simulators can be used as an effective means for teaching or

demonstrating concepts to students. This is particularly true of
simulators that make intelligent use of computer graphics and
animation.
9. Simulation can perform experimentation in a low-cost, low-risk
environment
