The document describes a flash separator unit operation that takes input streams and separates them into a vapor and liquid stream. It explains that if there is no liquid in the inlet streams, there will be no flow in the vapor stream. The document provides an example problem involving an equimolar mixture of acetone and water at 2 atm that is fed to a flash unit at 100°C or adiabatically. It outlines the principles of isothermal versus adiabatic operation and how calculations would be done using HYSYS.

Flash Unit
The flash separator unit operation takes any
number of input streams and separates the resulting mixture into a vapour and liquid stream. If there is no liquid present in the inlet streams, then the vapour stream will simply have no flow and the calculated composition will be the bubble point composition of the mixture. Example Equimolar
of acetone and water at Feed rate =
100 gmoles/s, 2 atm, vapor fraction = 0.8 is fed to a flash unit What
is the heat duty for an isothermal flash at 100 C ?
What is the temperature of an adiabatic flash at 2 atm?

Processes
Isothermal
For isothermal operation inlet and exit
temperature is the same The energy stream should be added The value of the heat duty will be calculated by Hysys Pressure drop through the column should be specified by the user Principles of Chemical Engineering Processes
Adiabatic
For adiabatic operation the heat duty in the
energy stream should be set to zero the energy stream was added Exit temperature will be estimated by Hysys Pressure drop should be specified
