Longitudinal & Shear Reinforcement Design of Column

1. This document summarizes the design of longitudinal and shear reinforcement for a column. The column is 1300mm wide and deep, made of 55 MPa concrete, and subject to an axial load of 20042 kN and shear force of 367 kN. 2. The column is classified as short along both axes. Longitudinal reinforcement of 8T25 bars is designed to resist the bending moments of 1249 kN-m and 326 kN-m along the two axes. 3. Shear reinforcement of T12 links at 150mm spacing is provided to satisfy code requirements, even though calculations show the shear stress does not require links. All design checks are satisfied.

Longitudinal & Shear Reinforcement Design of Column

1. Design Data
1.1 Section properties:

Width of column, b = 1300mm

Depth of column, h = 1300mm
Ratio of effective depth to the depth of column = 0.9
Therefore, the effective depth of column:
Effective depth of column (along X), b = 1170mm
Effective depth of column (along Y), h = 1170mm

1.2 Material Properties:

Strength of Concrete, fcu = 55 N/mm2
Strength of longitudinal reinforcement: 500 N/mm2
Strength of shear reinforcement: 500 N/mm2

2. Classification of column
The column is an unbraced column.
Along X direction:
Clear height of column, l0 = 3540 mm
End condition factor, = 1.3
Effective height ,l ex = l 0=1.3 3540=4602mm
l ex 4602
=
=3.54 <10
b 1300
Therefore, it is short along X direction.

Along Y direction:
Clear height of column, l0 = 2990 mm
End condition factor, = 1.5
Effective height ,l ey = l 0=1.5 2990=4485 mm
l ey 4485
=
=3.45<10
b 1300
Therefore, it is short along Y direction.
As a result, the column is a short column.

3. Ultimate Design Load

Along X direction:
Smaller initial end moment due to ultimate design load, M1 = 721.25
kN-m
Larger initial end moment due to ultimate design load, M2 = 1004.5 kNm

Along Y direction:
Smaller initial end moment due to ultimate design load, M1 = 148.21
kN-m
Larger initial end moment due to ultimate design load, M2 = 326.86 kNm
Axial load, N = 20042.26 kN
Shear force, V = 366.61 kN
