Example2 7NewsDealer

This document describes a simulation experiment to analyze the inventory management problem faced by a news dealer. The simulation models the daily demand for newspapers over a 20 day period under different demand conditions (good, fair, poor). It runs 400 trials of the simulation and analyzes the total profit over 20 days for each trial. The results show the distribution of total profits across the 400 trials, including average, median, minimum and maximum values.

How to generate random values:

For type of newsday and demand, use the VB function "Discrete" supplied in
this workbook. To see an example, look at the formula in cells C19 and C20.
To see the Visual Basic code, enter alt+F11 or click Tools/Macro/Visual Basic
Editor on the menu.
How to use it: Discrete(Range for Cumul Prob, Range for Service Times)

A "Gotcha" when using strings:

When I first solved this problem, I typed "Good ", "Fair" and "Poor" as the 3
possible types of Newsdays. In the Simulation Table in the Demand column, I
type "IF(C19="Good", ". Do you see my mistake?
It was comparing "Good" to "Good " (with an extra space at the end), so the
"IF" macro never found them equal. So it generated a "Good " day but never
used the "Good" probabilities to generate a demand. Luckily (for me!), I
caught the mistake. How?
I was not getting a Total Profit (over 20 days) nearly as high as we got in
previous editions of the book with the manual simulations. So I looked around
until finding the mistake.
