2, MM F5 Graph of Functions

1. The document discusses graphing functions and different types of graphs including linear, quadratic, cubic, reciprocal, and exponential functions. 2. It provides examples of completing function tables, drawing graphs using appropriate scales on the x- and y-axes, and using graphs to find function values and solve equations. 3. Key steps for drawing a graph include constructing a table of values, choosing scales, plotting points, drawing the line through points, and labeling the graph.

GRAPH OF FUNCTIONS

Graph of Functions
1. A function is a relationship that expresses a variable in terms of one
or more variables. For example, m=6 n , y=2 x +4 etc ..
2. We can represent a function by a line (straight or curved) on a
coordinate plane.
3. Examples of graphs of functions:
a) A linear function It is represented by a straight line
graph.
( y=mx +c )

b) A quadratic function It is represented by a curve

(parabola shape).
2
( y=a x +bx +c )

c) A cubic function It is represented by a curve (cubic

graph).
3
2
( y=a x +b x +cx +d )

d) A reciprocal function It is represented by a curve

(hyperbola shape).
a
( y= )
x

e) An exponential function It is represented by a curve.

GRAPH OF FUNCTIONS

4. Steps on drawing a graph of function:

Step 1: Construct a table of values.
Step 2: Choose suitable scales for the

xaxis

and

yaxis .
Step 3: Plot the points.
Step 4: Draw the graph (the line must pass through every
point).
Step 5: Label the graph.
