Spatial Damage Sensing Using Carbon

Carbon nanotube-based sensors embedded in structures can detect damage by measuring electrical impedance changes. Researchers developed a sensor system using these principles and electrical impedance tomography to identify and localize damage in structures. The system was able to accurately detect and map simulated damage in composite materials. Widespread use of such sensor networks could improve bridge and infrastructure safety monitoring to help address the subpar ratings many structures receive in the U.S.
