Q.5) Attempt the following Numerical Examples


1) A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates has a capacitance of 8 pF. What will be
the capacitance if the distance between the plates is reduced by half and the area of the plates is
doubled.

2) Two co-axial cylinders are having radii 5 cm and 6 cm respectively. Their lengths are 12 cm.
The inner cylinder is given a positive charge of 3.5x10-9 Coulomb. Find the capacitance of the
system. If instead of air, oil having dielectric constant 3 is filled between the cylinders upto the
height of 6 cm, what will be the capacitance of new configuration?
3) An electric field having uniform electric intensity of 6x 104 V/m in a medium of dielectric
constant 2, is incident at an angle of 600 on the surface of another medium of dielectric constant
6. Find the magnitude and direction of electric intensity in the other medium
4) A metal plate is having a charge of 2 coulombs on it. A conductor is charged by repeatedly
making contacts with the metal plate. The metal plate is recharged to 2 coulombs after each

10-9 coulomb, the capacitance of the capacitor is 75 pF. Find the dielectric constant of the
dielectric between the spheres.
6) A cube of side length 0.5 m is centered on the origin and its edges are parallel with the x, y,
and z axes. The electric dipole vector per unit volume, P, is given by
P = Po (xux + yuy + zuz) Coulombs/m2 Show that the bound charge density b = - div P.
Calculate the total bound charge inside the cube.
