CIVL2611 Tutorial 3

This document contains 4 problems related to forces on submerged surfaces in fluid mechanics: 1. A semi-circular gate hinged along its straight edge in a vertical wall containing water. The problem asks for the force on the latch at the lowermost point of the gate. 2. A square gate hinged on a horizontal axle located above the bottom. The problems ask for the lowest water level for the gate to open automatically and the force on a stop on the lower edge when full of water. 3. A rectangular gate held by a cable at its top and hinged at the bottom at an angle, submerged in water. The problem asks for the tension in the cable. 4

Tutorial 3. Forces on a Submerged Surface

(The problems marked with

1.

will be explained at tutorials.)

A semi-circular gate of diameter 2 m is hinged along its straight edge and set in a vertical
wall with the hinge horizontal and uppermost. One side of the wall is open to the
atmosphere, and the other side contains water of depth 3 m. The hinge is 0.5 m below the
surface.

The gate is latched at its lowermost point. What force is acting on the latch? (Magnitude
and direction)
2.

A gate in a vertical wall is 1 m square, and rotates on a horizontal axle located 40 cm

above the bottom edge of the gate. The upper edge is at a depth h below the surface, and
a stop on the lower edge of the gate opening prevents the gate from rotating in an anticlockwise direction. An elevation view of the gate and wall is shown below. The fluid
contained by the gate and wall is water.
a.

The gate will open automatically when the surface level is sufficiently high. What
is the lowest level at which the gate will open?

b.

When the water level is at the top of the gate, that is h = 0, what is the force
(magnitude and direction) on the stop on the lower edge of the gate opening?

A rectangular gate weighing 300 kg is held in place by a horizontal cable at its upper
end, and is hinged at its lower end, as shown. The gate is 2-m long and 1-m wide. What
is the tension in the cable? The water is 1.5-m deep, and the gate is at an angle of 60o to
the horizontal.

An open rectangular tank is 2-m wide and 4-m long. The tank contains water to a depth
of 2 m and oil (SG = 0.8) on top of the water to a depth of 1 m. Use the pressure prism
approach to determine the magnitude and location of the resultant fluid force acting on
one end of the tank. Assume water = 9.81103 N/m3.
