TENSES FUTURE FORMS
Both will and going to can express future in English. However, they are not normally
used interchangeably. For example, going to expresses sureness whereas will
expresses probability. Study the following cases.

GOING TO

Intention (100% sure)


Theres going to be a parade on Independence Day.
David is going to visit Jane this evening.

Imminent Actions
Uh-oh! Were going to run out of gas.
Shes agonizing. Shes going to die soon.

Predictions based on evidence


Look at those dark clouds. Its going to rain.
Its 10:00 and you arent ready! Youre going to be late.

Decisions made in the past


Greg needs money. Hes going to sell his car.
Its my sisters wedding today. Im going to wear my new dress.

Probabilities
He will probably call tonight.
Maybe well go to the beach next Sunday.

Promises and Offers


The report will be ready this afternoon, sir.
Dont worry. Ill help you with your homework.

WILL

We will win the game!


Ill get the job. Youll see.

Predictions
I think/believe/guess/am sure shell call any minute.
That team will win the championship.

Decisions made at the moment of speaking


I think Ill have the onion soup, please.

NOTE: Remember that the future can also be expressed with the Simple Present and
the Present Continuous:
The Simple Present: with timetables, schedules, or chronograms.
The train leaves for Jefferson City at 6:00.
Pauls plane arrives at 10 tonight.
What time does the next show begin?
Tomorrow is Sunday.
The present continuous: for future plans and arrangements.
A: What are you doing tomorrow?
B: I am going to a recital.
A: Are you doing anything this weekend?
B: Yes, we are having a barbecue.
