CLAUSES IF-CLAUSES (FIRST CONDITIONAL: FUTURE)
THE FIRST CONDITIONAL
The first conditional with if-clauses expresses events or situations which will probably
happen if another situation is met in the future. In these clauses, the main clause usually
includes the modal will, and the if-clause has a present form.
If you see Jane, will you tell her to call me?
I will definitely complain to the manager if the service is bad.
USE
The first conditional is used in the following cases:

To say that something is likely to happen in the future.

We will probably fly to Aruba on our honeymoon if we save enough money.
If it is sunny tomorrow morning, we will go to the club to play some tennis.

To make promises.
Ill give you a ride if you wait until Im ready.
If Mary comes to the cocktail party, Ill give her your message.

To give warnings.
If your daughter eats that cake, she will not want to have lunch.
Youll get drunk if you continue drinking like that.

To threaten somebody.
I wont let you go out if you dont finish your homework.
If anybody tries to escape, we will shoot them dead.

We can use the modals can, must, or may instead of will.

If you want to travel abroad, you must renew your passport.
Can you take the dog out if you are not too busy?
You may use the car this evening if you need it.

Sometimes speakers use the modal can in the if-clause.

If I can help you tomorrow, Ill let you know.
We will be very pleased if you can come to our wedding.
