Wisetex Example: Creation of A Bi Axial 2D Braid Wisetex Example: Creation of A Bi-Axial 2D Braid and Stiffness Prediction

1. The document describes using WiseTex and TexComp software to model and analyze the stiffness of a 2D braided composite. 2. WiseTex is used to define the braided composite architecture and assign yarn properties. TexComp then assigns matrix properties and computes the stiffness values for the representative volume element. 3. The analysis shows the Young's moduli in the warp and weft directions (Exx = 55GPa, Eyy = 38GPa) and shear modulus (Gxy = 1.24GPa or 21.6GPa depending on computation axis). Exercises are suggested to modify yarn properties and compare stiffness computation methods.

Some definitions

Representative Volume Element (RVE)

For textile
composites the
RVE is
i a repetitive
ii
volume in 2D or 3D
textiles

Filament Fibre
Mono-filament: uses yyarns that consist
of a single long fiber
Multi-filament: uses two or more
filaments (usually thousands) that are
twisted together to form yarns

Tex is a measure of yarn density:

1 Tex = 1 gram per 1000 meters of yarn length
3

Twill 2*2 weave

The panel that opens is modified:
1. Convert the checkerboard to have a 4*4 dimension
2. Give the pattern shown - note a double click on boxes converts white to black (or vice
versa); a black box means the yarn crosses over another and white for crossing under.

Yarns types are now added: We shall define two types and use different yarn types
for the weft and the warp directions.
To do this click the left mouse key in the Yarn box and then right mouse click to

Results: Shear Modulus

If shear modulus (Gxy) is selected under Post > List Results > Properties you
should obtain

Gxy = 1.24GPa

Shear modulus (Gxy) or other properties may be

computed in another axis frame.
E.g. use Post > Results CSYS and Global CSYS
with
h 45 about
b
the
h (vertical)
(
l) z-axis.
This would allow shear at 45 to the yarn directions to
be found.
The shear modulus (Gxy) under Post > List
Results > Properties should be 21.6GPa

Gxy =

For the iso-strain assumption stiffness
contribution of each grain (total = n) are
summed for the unit cell stiffness.

Identical computations are made for isostress except that grain compliance
contributions are summed.

Corresponding unit cell compliance is

inversion of the stiffness matrix.

Stiffness is obtained from inversion of the
