Term 2-Year 2015

(Published 29 May-LS)

Welcome to Term 2 at Raffles
Montessori Kindergarten (Still
Road)! We want to especially
welcome our new friends, Isaac,
Kevin, Emmett, Deven and Max!
This term, the school had many
interesting
activities
and
celebrated Easter, Mothers Day,
Earth Day. They also had
outdoor excursions.
**************************
This term, the Toddlers
Community Club had the theme
of Animals for the many
stories, dance, music and
movement activities. The
children learned about the
different animals at the zoo,
farm animals, pets, insects and
sea creatures. They also had the
opportunity to look at little
terrapins in a small tank and
feed them.

Bumblebee, and Ants go

Marching. The child learned to
sing, dance, move in sync with
the Directress movements.
Stick Puppets were also used in
some songs.
The children enjoyed story
telling time both in English and
Mandarin. Some stories were
told with music and actions.
The children enjoyed them
immensely and would get really
excited participating in these
story telling times. Were
going on a Bear Hunt! was a
great favourite as the children
expressed themselves through
movements
and
facial
expressions. They also enjoyed
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
and the Lion and the Mouse.

The toddlers enjoyed the wide

range of art and craft activities,
based on the animal theme,
and created butterflies, jellyfish
and many more. They practised
motor skills like rubbing, tearing
and sticking. This term, they
also learned a few songs,
including Five Little Monkeys,
Fly, Fly the Butterfly, Baby

and I, creating apples and

iguanas from them.

The Montessori Class children
also had a great term. Many of
the children have improved in
their reading abilities and also
are more enthusiastic to
challenge themselves with new
work. The children discussed
about
Earth
Day,
the
importance of saving the planet
and ways to conserve precious
resources like water, electricity,
and on recycling. They children
took the topic of conservation
very seriously and for a week,
they decided to stop using air-
conditioning for a few hours
and even tried to implement
some conservation measures at
home!

The children also learned about

the many colours, and were
asked to pick out the colours
during circle time. They learned
the different alphabet sounds,
like S, T, I, P and A.
The children were also shown
the different animal toys which
started with those letters and
also had the opportunity to do
artwork using the alphabets, A

The children have also been
doing a lot of art and craft,
using natural and recycled
materials, as well as other
materials. The children also
enjoyed painting using their
fingers, brushes, cling film
painting and more.

Easter

Mothers Day
Before Mothers Day, the
children prepared cards and
craft flowers for their mothers.
The toddlers created handprint
flowers and practised a
Mothers Day song to sing to
their mothers. They were also
shown how to hug and kiss
their mothers on Mothers Day.
The older children in the
Montessori Class prepared
beautiful crepe flowers for their
mothers, using a myriad of
coloured crepe paper to make
beautiful flowers.

For Easter, the toddlers created
a collage Easter egg whilst the
Montessori class created lambs
using cotton buds. The children
had a really fun Easter Egg Hunt
in the garden, carrying baskets
and filling them with chocolate
eggs in the garden. The older
children were paired with the
toddlers, so that they could
guide the younger ones in the
garden on their hunt. The
children really had a great time!

Mandarin Classes
This term, the children have
shown further improvement in
their verbal communication,
and ability to recognise
characters. Several parents
have given us feedback that
their children are very excited
to demonstrate their speaking
abilities. The children have
shown their parents the reading
materials and described the
pictures in Mandarin.
The children have been getting
lots of practise in Mandarin as
they learned new songs. They
have been introduced to
and . During
music and movement sessions,
they practised two new
dances, , and .

Poetry () has also been

incorporated into their learning
experiences. Art and craft
activities also provided a
context for the children to
develop
their
Mandarin
speaking abilities. As the
children created their photo
frames and crafted butterflies
using dried leaves, they
engaged with each other in
Mandarin.

Excursions

On 13th May, the toddlers went
for an excursion with the
teachers and accompanying
parents. They watched the play,
The Magic Treetop, an
interactive play with an animal
theme. The children had great
fun, following the actions and
responding verbally to the play.
Parents accompanying the
children also had a lot of fun
with their children, some
participating enthusiastically.

*********************************

For the Montessori Class, the
children
went
to
Fish@BigSplash
to
do
LongKang
fishing.
The
children enjoyed catching the
fish and even brought back the
fish and a small tank home. The
children found it very exciting
to catch the fish and feed the
bigger fish. They got to step
into the LongKang and had
the opportunity to have close
encounters with the fish. There
was much laughter and chatter.
