Course Syllabus and Classroom Procedures: Western Middle School Seventh Grade Mathematics Mrs. Ngaiza

This document outlines the course syllabus and classroom procedures for a 7th grade mathematics class. The course will focus on developing students' understanding of ratio and rate reasoning, geometry concepts like angle measure and surface area, and operations with rational numbers. Students will be expected to come to class prepared with materials like a pencil and math notebook. The class will follow the school's discipline procedures, with consequences like demerits or detention for infractions. Students will receive grades based on assessments, homework, and projects, with categories weighted towards mastery of standards. Contact information for the teacher is provided at the end.

Course Syllabus and Classroom Procedures

Western Middle School

Seventh Grade Mathematics
Mrs. Ngaiza
Course Description: This course is intended to teach students the math concepts set forth by the Kentucky
Common Core Standards in 7th grade Math. Our instruction will be focused on developing an understanding
of ratio and rate reasoning by observing proportional relationships in graphs, tables, equations, and percents.
We will extend students understanding of geometry, such as problems involving angle measure, surface
area, and volume. When developing their number sense, they will learn how to add and subtract, multiply
and divide rational numbers; solve applications involving rational number, how to generate equivalent
expressions, how to apply the properties of operations, and how to create and solve equations and
inequalities in applications. In addition, we will investigate chance processes, such as random sampling and
will draw inferences about populations.
General Rules: Be on time, be prepared, be respectful, and be responsible.
Preparation for Class: Students need a pencil, completed homework, their math notebook and folder and
their agenda for class each day.
Expectations for class:

Everyone has the right to, and should expect to, learn.
Each individual is worthy of respect.
Classroom orderliness is necessary for an effective classroom.
Hard work is necessary for learning.
Thinking critically and asking questions creates problem solvers!

Earned consequences: We follow the team and school procedures for discipline. A student will receive a
warning for minor infractions. After the student receives his/her 2nd, he/she will be given a demerit. Parents
will be contacted with each demerit. Five demerits will result in a conference and the seventh demerit will
result in an after school detention with Mrs. Foster or Mrs. Jones. Certain disciplinary infractions may result
in an immediate office referral.
Late Work: Work turned in late and not associated with an absence will not earn full credit. All homework
will be assigned on Monday of each week. It must be turned in by one week from the assigned date and
turned in during their class period. Students can turn the work in a day late, Friday, for a maximum grade of
80%. Students may turn in work on the following Monday for a maximum grade of 70%. If work is turned
in after Monday students will receive 50%.
Missed Work:
a) It is the students responsibility to obtain the homework assignments, notes & any other pertinent
information that is missed during an absence. There is a student center where they may pick up
homework and assignments they missed during their absence.
b) Missed work due to an absence: Additional time (up to five school days) and full credit will be
allowed for each day of a verifiable and excused absence. After five school days, credit will be
reduced one letter grade for each additional day. Exceptions will be made in unique, situations as
determined by the teacher and/or administrator.

will receive a conduct grade for each class.
Grading Scale:
The District grading scale as applied to points earned by the end of a grading period is as follows:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70 79%
D = 60 69%
U = Below 59%
Weighted Grades:

student reflection, class assignments, or other measures of student interaction (must include four or more)
Student Progression toward Standards: (30%)
