While the guide at the quondam temples of Bodhgaya took the mass of student citing the
anachronism of certain stone structures, the manifestation of rocks favouring the presence of a
moribund volcano vested my attention. By mere trek of erudite words he duped that the lava may
erupt out of earth anytime; with the nearby fires in the shrubs being the attestation to his
statement. Not in a position to moot owing to constraint of knowledge, I mingled with the group
of students who were tethered to the guide moving to the next stone veneer and temples.
However my inquisitiveness which was in chaos then led me put that rock in my pocket without
any foresight for what I will do with it. That was in the summer of 2003 and the strand of events
that accounted for the specific experience was the school trip to a historical place. Back in the
freshman class at IIT(ISM), not only did the metamorphosis and fractional crystallisation stirred
my deep interests in the earth sciences but also aided me in answering long lost questions of that
summer trip. It seemed though that the volcanic sedimentary sequence necessary for such
occurrence was presence. That day the Guide would have happily attested if he knew that he was
actually pointing in the right direction.
question on earth & environment and the clutches of economic trough. My time at SUPER-30,
the ambitious program for students from marginalised background, stirred my intellection about
the Indian bourgeois thought process. While I successfully made my way to the elite IIT(ISM), I
realised how vital the mentoring process is for the Indian middle class students who aims to
realise the American Dream on Indian soil. Throughout my college I remained inveterate to my
wish to teach and mentor the students from lowly profile. Initially I took up this task whilst
regular mentoring in Super 30 which I later continued with NGOs. My zeal was no solitary,
some of my colleagues pitched their time and resources and we ended up being the progenitors
of a program we called BRAINOMANIA that tend to escalate the amorphous dreams of those
who need positive transformation.
My interest towards energy and environment was shaped to a larger extent by my independent
case study readings on Gulf of Mexico and Barnett Shale gases. During sophomore year, my
project on Insitu Energy Production using Induction Coils was proclaimed me laurels at the
national event CATALYCA by Central Fuel Research Institute. I participated in multiple
industrial case studies to amply acquaint myself to the energy and environment sector.
Throughout my senior years I participated in multiple industrial case studies to amply acquaint
myself to the energy sector. My ebullient interest in energy studies also led me into winning
Shell Energy Case Study. My superior academic record conjugated with indomitable keen
towards energy sector led me in winning esteemed international awards. I was amongst 5
students chosen globally for John Sidney Marshall Scholarship in 2014 and Coal & Energy
Divisions Award in 2015 by Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME).
Even though my conviction for cleaner and better energy sources at that moment was theoretical
and less than accurate, it has now been studded with the ideas on convergence of science,
economics and policy with my industrial experience. At the outset of my industrial career at Tata
Steel, the nascent view of the large scale industrialisation haunted me with the questions that my
professional only answered me half way. Can energy from fossil fuels be produced without
polluting environment? Is it possible to have renewable energy fuelling the nation? What is the
link between the energy we produce the climate change? I now believe that my choice to study a
course focused on environment and energy is the result of a mature reflection guided by
immense thought and research. With the unpredictable in energy resources and need for
economic competency of renewables, the future of energy seems to be tapering off. Future
energy solutions will require cutting edge convergence and multidisciplinary energy integration,
thus placing energy experts at the heart of these solutions. It is the interdependence of
technology, policy and business and the irrefutability of energy and environment studies being
decisive for a sustainable future that motivates me towards the MSc in Environmental Change
and Management program.
Apart from academics; I was profoundly involved in extracurricular activities. Due to
engagement in extempores, debates and Model United Nations (MUN), debating came naturally
to me. I won several debating competition at national and intercollegiate level. Due to my
efficacious interpersonal and communication skills, I was invited twice to Harvard Conference in
the panel of Energy and Environment. Owing to my leadership abilities I was selected as one of
the Campus Ambassador for United Nations RIO+22 Campaign for Sustainable Energy in 2015
and a member of Young Leaders Committee by SME in 2016. During the years my leadership
skills were also nurtured by adventure trekking, mountaineering and outdoor leadership courses
involving teambuilding. My last trekking experience to the Greater Himalayan Ranges cued me
that adventure lies in transformation and we must struggle to find the potential through our own
adventure.
