Molokai

The document provides an annotated bibliography for four sources on Hawaiian history and leprosy. It summarizes each source, including a fictional story about a girl sent to Moloka'i, true stories from patients at the Kalaupapa leprosy settlement, a medical text on the causes and research of leprosy, and a proposed student research assignment to argue for or against sending lepers to Moloka'i. The summaries explain how each text could be used to teach students about the history and introduce different perspectives, while meeting various common core English language arts standards.

Hawaiian History and Leprosy

Brennert, Alan. Moloka'i. St Martins. 2004. Print

A fictional story of leprosy in Hawaii.

The complexity of Molokai is challenging enough for a highschool

student. I would use this book to beginning the introduction of Hawaii
history and the treatment of lepers in Hawaii. This story follows the life
of a young girl who is forced to move to Molokai and lives out most of
her life on the island. The compelling story, along with the historical
influence in the book will help bring a human side to the history of the
island of Molokai.
Using this book will bring an introduction into the history of Hawaii and
their treatment of lepers during this time. The book gives a first hand
fictional account, with a relatively happy ending to some dark and
tragic parts in Hawaiian history.
The requirements that this reading will meet specifically for Hawaiian
education in common core for English.

Tayman, John. The Colony: The Harrowing True Story of the Exiles of
Molokai. Schniber, 2007. Print. Non-fiction.
This author presented true stories of many of the leper patients in
Kalaupapa on Molokai. With adding this book as an addition to the
fictional Molikai book, it gives students from a non-fiction perspective
honest, true stories of how lepers were treated. Reinforcing Hawaiis
tough past with the island of Molikai.

This text about the causes of leprosy and research shows students how
it is contracted and the medical reasons behind the disease. Using this

text I would have the students have a class discuss how the doctors
treatment of the lepers was either fair or unjust. Bringing the students
to brainstorm for their final project on the unit of leprosy and the
history of Hawaii.

Evaluate an author's premises, claims, and evidence by corroborating
or challenging them with other information.

Four my fourth text I would have the students do their own research to
argue either for or against the sending of lepers to MolokaI during that
time. I would require at least two credible sources and a five to ten
page paper. This would satisfy the common core standards of:
