ESM 72-00-00, FAULT ISOLATION 001

GENERAL

Revision No. 29

Dated 05/31/2013

* * * FOR ALL -10E MODELS

TASK 72-00-00-810-801

1. General.

A. The Fault Isolation Manual contains procedures that provide instructions to

isolate fault conditions that result in a fault message being sent by the
FADEC.
B. The document is divided into seven fault isolation procedures:

(1) Fault Isolation 001: Provides general scope on the whole procedure and
explains how to use it when a fault message appears, provides a
description of six fault message categories, provides some general fault
isolation instructions, specifies tools, equipment and consumable
materials utilized during a fault isolation, and contains two tables of
all FADEC faults listed both ways: in Fault Code order - Table 101, and
CMC Message alphabetical order - Table 102.
(2) Fault Isolation 002-007: Deal with fault isolation procedures
corresponding to six categories of FADEC faults. Each fault isolation
procedure contains general information on its contents, how-to-use
instructions, two tables of faults, listed the same way as in this
procedure: in Fault Code order - Table 101, and CMC Message alphabetical
order - Table 102, and troubleshooting procedures relevant to the
faults.
(3) Fault Isolation 008: Deal with "Non-FADEC" fault isolation procedures.

C. FADEC Fault Message Categories:

(1) In-Flight Warning: Indicates fault that requires pilot action or

notification. Sent to the cockpit CAS messages or icons on the EICAS
displays. Refer to TASK 72-00-00-810-802 (72-00-00, Fault Isolation
002).

(2) No Dispatch: Dispatch is not permitted with message present. Message can
be caused by a single indicated fault or a combination of short and/or
long-term faults. Refer to TASK 72-00-00-810-803 (72-00-00, Fault
Isolation 003).

(3) Short-Term Dispatch: Dispatch is permitted with a short-term fault(s)

present. The permitted dispatch interval for these faults is 150 flight
hours. The indicated fault must be fixed/cleared before 150 flight hours
expires. Message is displayed on EICAS. Refer to TASK 72-00-00-810-804
(72-00-00, Fault Isolation 004).
(4) Long-Term Dispatch: Dispatch is permitted with long-term fault(s)
present. Correct all long-term faults on a periodic basis. The time
interval approved for this periodic maintenance is less than or equal to
750 flight hours. Refer to TASK 72-00-00-810-805 (72-00-00, Fault
Isolation 005).
(5) Economic Dispatch: Dispatch is permitted with no time limit. Refer to
TASK 72-00-00-810-806 (72-00-00, Fault Isolation 006).

(6) Maintenance Information Messages: Can only be seen on the CMC. Refer to
TASK 72-00-00-810-807 (72-00-00, Fault Isolation 007).

D. Special troubleshooting procedures corresponding to the Fault Message

Categories are defined as subtasks in TASK 72-00-00-810-802 (72-00-00, Fault
Isolation 002) thru TASK 72-00-00-810-807 (72-00-00, Fault Isolation 007).
(1) Each subtask concerning the fault isolation procedure may consist of the

following parts:

(a) Maintenance Messages.

This part gives the CMC message and the fault code information for
the fault isolation procedure.

(b) Description.

This part describes the nature and possible causes of the fault.

(c) Initial Evaluation Procedure.

This part provides preliminary procedure that, in some circumstances,

releases the maintenance crew from performing further troubleshooting
steps provided in the Fault Isolation Procedure specific for the
subtask.

(d) Fault Isolation Procedure.

This part defines the procedure to isolate and correct the fault.

(e) Repair Confirmation.

This part defines the steps necessary to prove that the fault has
been corrected.

2. How-to-Use Instructions.

A. Read and follow General Fault Isolation Instructions described in paragraph

3.
B. Having the Fault Code and/or CMC Message of the fault under investigation
find appropriate Fault Message Category and Fault Isolation Subtask number
in Table 101 - using the Fault Code, or in Table 102 - using the CMC
Message.
C. Go to the appropriate Fault Isolation corresponding to the Fault Message
Category and find the Fault Isolation Procedure that describes actions to
isolate and correct the fault.

D. Follow the instructions in each procedure to isolate the fault. Each fault
message includes instructions that can vary depending on which FADEC channel
sent the message. Make sure that you follow the instructions for the FADEC
channel (A or B) that sent the fault message when applicable.

3. General Fault Isolation Instructions.

A. Record all fault messages before you do maintenance on the engine, or before
you remove the engine from the aircraft. Refer to the AMM for operation of
the EICAS and the CMC. Note the engine and FADEC designations.
B. Some troubleshooting procedures require special evaluation engine runs in
addition to the initial evaluation provided in particular subtasks. If the
special evaluation engine run is required, the run procedure will be
provided within the Fault Isolation Procedure.

C. Some faults may require checking of electrical characteristics of possible

defective components.

D. Replace all components that fail a required check. Turn off the appropriate
aircraft circuit breakers, refer to the AMM, and then re-power the FADEC and
clear the faults. If faults are no longer present, do the necessary engine
checks for replacement of that component.
(1) Because some fault messages are only sent during engine operation, a
confirmation that a fault has been corrected can require engine
operation, as instructed in the specific isolation procedure, to do the

check.

(2) Because the FADEC channel and the igniters change with each engine
start, more than one engine start can be necessary to confirm that an
engine start fault has been corrected. Refer to the engine operational
check procedure.

(3) Because some test faults (i.e., overspeed and EDP relay test faults) are
stored to FADEC memory until the test is passed, multiple starts, as
instructed in the specific isolation procedure, can be necessary to
clear the fault after replacement of the component.

E. Swapping of the FADEC harnesses for "XXX SENSOR RANGE FAULT" faults.

(1) The first step for "XXX SENSOR RANGE FAULT" faults in the Fault
Isolation Procedure is to decide, using your judgment, whether the
probability of a FADEC fault is significant enough to be taken into
account as an actual fault cause. If so, perform the swapping of the
FADEC harnesses according to the following procedure:
(a) Turn off 400 Hz power to the FADEC by pulling the appropriate
aircraft circuit breakers. Refer to the AMM.

(b) Disconnect the FADEC-side P3 and P4 connectors and swap the W3

(yellow) cable and the W4 (blue) cable.
(c) Re-power the FADEC.
1

If the fault is now detected on the opposite channel (the fault

switches channels), the defect is in the component or the cable
associated with the original fault channel. Continue with the
Fault Isolation Procedure at the subsequent step.

If the fault remains on the same channel (the fault does not
switch channels), the defective component is the FADEC. Replace
the FADEC. Refer to:
FADEC Removal, AMM TASK 73-21-01-000-801-A.

FADEC Installation, AMM TASK 73-21-01-400-801-A.

F. If a fault message is still present, continue the fault isolation.

T25 OUT OF RANGE

(ENG X NO DISPATCH)
NOTE: For v5.32 and
below, this fault
is a "SHORT
DISPATCH" fault

The channels A and B

72-00-00-810-119
T2 sensors disagree by (SHORT DISPATCH)
more than 5.56C.
Signal selection is
based on rate of
change of T12 and any
previous range fault.
NOTE: Do not convert
5.56C to F because
in this case, the
temperature conversion
is not a direct ratio
from C to F

The local channel

engine T12 sensor is
out of the range of 100 to 199F (-73 to
93C)

72-00-00-810-116

The two T25 signals

72-00-00-810-218
differ by more than
(NO DISPATCH)
50F (10C). Default
signal is one closest
to T25 model. Fault
may be due to single
channel fault if
occurs at low sub-idle
engine speeds
Both channels of the
72-00-00-810-217
T25 sensors are out of (NO DISPATCH)
range
T25 sensor is outside
expected limits

72-00-00-810-728
