Resident Mimi Warburton encourages

Moorestown to take on Blue Ribbon
Challenge in support of police officers
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
After various police officers
nationwide have come under
scrutiny, Moorestown resident
Mimi Warburton chose to voice
her support for police officers at
the Moorestown Town Council
meeting on Monday, Aug. 8, and
requested the community join
her in accepting the Blue Ribbon
Challenge.
Our police protect us everyday by putting their own lives on
the line, Warburton said. By
putting the blue ribbons out
there, were opening up the conversation. I know I dont live in
Philadelphia where my son
serves, I live in Moorestown and I
want my community to be the
light that guides the rest of the
world.
This challenge asks residents
and business owners to hang a
blue ribbon on trees, lampposts,
porch lights or other places outside their homes or businesses to
symbolize their support of the
brave men and women of law en-

forcement who keep the community safe. A primary reason why

Warburton has requested the
community join her in this initiative stems from her son, Brian,
who has been a police officer
in Philadelphia now for many
years.
Along with the Moorestown
Town Council, Warburton has
also gained support from the
Moorestown Police Department.
Additionally, many residents and
businesses across the community
have already adopted this challenge, proudly showing off their
ribbons in support.
I made this request because of
what I have seen my son go
through the last six months. Its
been horrendous what the police
officers have experienced, Warburton said. Supporting the police is something we have to do
and something that we cant just
sit back and allow for everything
to go wrong.
Before her request to council
and community, Middle Townplease see WARBURTONS, page 21

From left, Moorestown School District staff members Bridget B. Potts, chair of professional development, Carole Butler, director of curriculum and instruction, and Sue Tosti, supervisor of English
Language Arts, spent the afternoon on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at the Moorestown Library instructing
60 district teachers about library services and how to best utilize these resources for their students.

Initially suggested by the
Moorestown Mall as a way to attract customers, the annual
Touch A Truck event will celebrate its fifth year, rain or shine,
on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. in the mall parking lot by
Boscov's Department Store facing
Route 38. Last year, this event, cohosted by Oaks Integrated Care,
attracted more than 4,000 attendees and dozens of trucks and
hopes to bring in an even larger
crowd this year.

there's still time to create your portraits and be in the yearbook!

We jumped at the chance to be

the nonprofit partner for this
event. We immediately knew it
was a fantastic opportunity to
connect with the local community and raise awareness for our
cause, Jennifer Gaynor, development coordinator at Oaks Integrated Care, said.
Everyone in the community is
invited to attend this fun, affordable and family-friendly event,
and all proceeds from Touch A
Truck will benefit the Oaks Integrated Care food pantries in Mt.
Holly and Berlin, which serve
more than 800 families a month.
Oaks Integrated Care is a mental health service in Westampton
Township that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for vulnerable adults, children and families throughout New Jersey. By focusing on integrated care, the or-

orthodontics

ganization can begin to treat the

whole person to achieve both
mental and physical wellness.
Touch A Truck brings people
of all ages together in a fun, family atmosphere to raise awareness
and funds for Oaks Integrated
Care, Gaynor said. Oaks serves
over 16,000 individuals a year in
our community living with a
mental illness or developmental
disability.
At the event, more than 25 vehicles will be present, including fire
trucks, dump trucks, a 1964 ambulance, waste management vehicles, the Red Cross Fire Safety
House, the Burlington County
Mobile Library, the Habitat For
Humanity Box Truck, a Harley
Davidson motorcycle, the House
of Paws Mobile Vet, a school bus,

SEPT. 713, 2016 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 11

National Preparedness Month

is time to establish a family plan
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Theres no better time for families to make an emergency preparedness plan than now. September marks yet another National
Preparedness Month, and local
authorities encourage all residents to establish and communicate strong emergency preparedness plans with family members
and friends.
I would also urge all residents
to heed local warnings and make
the appropriate preparations in a
timely manner. Residents should
review their own plans and make
sure the whole family knows
what to do, Mayor Phil Garwood
said.
One of the top ways emergencies present themselves is
through
natural
disasters.
Whether it be tornados, lightning
strikes or superstorms, these natural phenomena can cause serious and even fatal implications.
To best prepare, families should
develop a plan based on an individual's whereabouts, including
whether he or she is at home,
work, school or outdoors, and
identify a safe place to take shelter and have frequent drills to
practice these techniques.
National Preparedness Month
is a very important initiative
from FEMA that should not be
taken lightly. Being inland, we
have been fortunate in not suffering some of the more serious
storms and flooding that affect
coastal areas, Moorestown Police Chief Lee R. Lieber said.
Dont forget that our immediate
area has been under seven disaster declarations since 2009. We
cannot forget the extensive damage and extended power outages
we suffered during some immobilizing blizzards, during Superstorm Sandy and the straight line
winds on June 23, 2015.
Families should also have
knowledge about the county
where they live, keep a highway
map nearby to follow storm movement from weather bulletins and
have a NOAA Weather Radio with

a warning alarm tone and battery

back-up to receive warnings. If
severe weather threatens, it
should also remain a priority to
check on people who are elderly,
very young or who are physically
or mentally disabled.
Every family should sit down
and prepare an all risks emergency response plan. Go to
www.ready.gov for plan information. Get a NOAA weather alert
radio and monitor storm alerts.
The radios are inexpensive and
battery operated. All our township buildings and schools have
been provided with one of these
radios to warn of an impending
emergency condition, Lieber
said.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, initial steps
to take when designing a family
disaster plan should include gathering information about hazards
to find out what type of disasters
could occur and how you should
respond. Next, a family should
meet together to create and discuss a thorough plan that includes two places to meet a spot
outside of the home for an emergency and a place away from the
neighborhood in case the family
cannot return home. An out-ofstate friend should be a designated family check-in contact for
each member to call in case of
separation.
When implementing a familys
plan, it is imperative that emergency telephone numbers be posted by a phone, that safety features
such as smoke detectors or fire
extinguishers be installed in the
house and that the house is also
inspected for potential hazards.
Teaching all members of the family basic safety measures, such as
CPR, first aid and how to call 911
are also a must. Additionally, it is
a good idea to keep enough supplies in the home to last for at
least three days.
The
things
that
[the
Moorestown First Aid and EMS]
feel are important are the importance of calling 9-1-1 for all emergencies, making sure that home
addresses are visible from the

street, that everyone should learn

CPR to increase the chances of
saving a loved one, and considering installing or purchasing a key
lock box and giving the code to
the Moorestown Police Department for the sick or elderly to
allow access to the home in the
event that a door cannot be unlocked for us, James Plagge, assistant chief of Moorestown First
Aid and EMS, said.
In the interest of keeping residents informed in times of critical incident, there are four free
programs the township utilizes
for notifying residents. These programs include the SWIFT 911
community notification system,
the Nixle public alerting system,
Twitter and the township website. For more information on
these

Local elections dont have to get out of hand

Richard Donnelly
ceo of newspaper media group

he topic of campaign funding

rears its ugly head about this
time every year. While its an
issue that is associated with biggerbudget elections such as for Congress,
governor and president, its not something that passes by local elections.
And thats a shame a real shame.
Elections at every level should be
about whos right for the job, not who
can raise, and spend, the most money.
Campaign funding reform has been
discussed, and implemented, time and
again, but its not an easy thing to control. There are plenty of loopholes,
and it can be hard to track.
At the local level, though, it should
be easier and it should be regulated.
A few years ago, one municipality
passed a pay-to-play ordinance that we
believe every town in New Jersey
should adopt.
Moorestown originally passed an ordinance to align its campaign contribution limits to that of the state

Your thoughts
Do you think municipalities should have
strict pay-to-play ordinances? Or do you
think local politics can govern itself?

$2,600 for professional business entities and $7,200 for political action committees. Residents complained,
though, and for good reason. Those
numbers were a substantial increase
from the towns original limits of $300
and $500, respectively.
After signatures were gathered opposing the change, Moorestown reversed the ordinance and returned its
contribution limits to the lower levels.
It was a good move, and one that we
encourage other towns to make, if
they havent already.
Were all for pay-to-play ordinances
that protect local towns from being
run by outside influences such as corporations or other political entities.
Local politics, more so than any other

form of government, should be about

the residents of the town.
Local elections should be about the
candidates involved and what they
will do for the town and its residents.
Period.
It shouldnt be about what businesses want to see or political machines
want to see. Its about the people.
We encourage all local councils,
commissions and committees in New
Jersey to pass regulations on contribution limits, if such regulations arent
already on the books.
Now that the kiddies are back to
school, its election season, and as we
watch debates and read about issues
from candidates at the state level and
hear of even more trouble at the federal level its hard not to lose confidence in the honesty and integrity of
politics today.
But local elections and local politics
dont have to be that way, as long as we
control it.

SEPT. 713, 2016 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 21

Warburtons son a police officer

WARBURTONS
Continued from page 1
ship had been acknowledged as
the first community in New Jersey to take on this initiative. However, after recalling some of the
horrible occurrences Brian has
gone through in the recent past,
including being the target of
derogatory comments in addition
to much worse, Warburton knew
she had to start the change she
wished to see throughout the
community. She said the business
of police officers is night-and-day
compared to the business of
many other members of the community.
I pray for my son every day
and ask that many others pray for
him, too, and that the streets become safer, Warburton said. We
must be able to end the senseless
acts of violence.
Although she understands
there are instances out there involving the police that arent
right, Warburton believes there
must be more respect for law and
order. She draws on her personal
experience in learning how to approach wrongful situations from
having once heard Coretta Scott
King, an American author, activist and civil rights leader, and
the wife of Martin Luther King,
Jr., speak.
When I heard her speak, she
said we have to stand up for our
morals but never violently, Warburton said. If you see something you know is wrong, you
cant sit back and not do anything.
Since her initiative was called
into action, a Facebook group
called "Support Moorestown Police" has been created for residents to get involved and follow
this and other initiatives that will

support the town's police. Residents can request blue ribbons

through a sign-up link on the
Facebook page. Additional pickup locations will be announced
via the Facebook page over the
coming months.
In addition to the ribbons, the
group will have a "Thank You"
book where residents can thank
police officers in their own words
and with their own messages.
The Facebook page can be visited

at www.Facebook.com/SupportMoorestownPolice, or residents
email
StandWithcan
[email protected] to
request a ribbon or get involved
with this project.
Lets be the light. If you dont
like something going on, then
lets have a conversation and try
to change things, Warburton
said. Its not about giving the
community fish, but instead
about teaching them how to fish.

more. Attendees will have the
chance to touch and explore each
truck on display and interact
with the drivers.
In years past, the most popular
truck has been the 35-foot Krispy
Kreme Cruiser.
My favorite part of the event
is seeing the kids faces light up
with excitement as they explore
the different trucks, Gaynor
said. Last year, I actually heard a

little boy say on his way out,

Mom, this was the best day of my
life!
Adults will be charged $5 for
admittance and children are free.
Tickets for additional activities,
including a bounce house, rock
climbing wall, face painters,
games and arts and crafts, as well
as for food, will be available for
purchase.
We also expect mall restaurant and food court vendors to

Thanks to all partners

By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
Each fall the Department of
Parks and Recreation reviews its
summer activities in an effort to
continually improve the programs its offers. In doing so, it is
absolutely imperative that the department thanks its partners and
supporters who help to make
these programs successful.
The first thank you is to Sean
Fischel Connect for its continued
support of the Special Needs
Summer Camp. Its generous donation has allowed for the Special
Needs Camp to expand its services from the 28 families it served in
2015 to 37 in 2016. This program
has experienced a 350 percent increase since its inception in 2008,
and the SFC donations that began
in 2013 have allowed for the department to meet these needs.
Thanks to the contribution, the
Department was able to provide
more staff and accommodate
more children in the program up
to the age of 21. In addition to offering more families the opportunity to engage in this program,
the contributions of SFC and the
departments other partners have
maintained the low and manageable cost of $75, which has never
increased since the programs inception.
Thank you also goes out to the
additional sponsors of the Recreation Special Needs Camp.
Thanks to the Moorestown Education
Foundation,
Bayada
Health Services Group and Quaker Wealth Management, the camp
has expanded its content as well.
This specialized camp offers not
only continuing education opportunities during the summer
months but also learning opportunities outside the classroom.
From onsite camp activities to
offsite field trips, the Recreation
Special Needs Camp provides special needs students and their families important support throughout the summer.
An additional contributor to
the Special Needs Camp is the law
firm of McDowell, Posternock,
Apell and Detrick, which provid-

ed drawstring backpacks for each

camper. Providing each student
with a special camp backpack
helped to keep the campers organized for special activities as
well as helping campers to identify one another in a large group
setting. The Moorestown Lunch
Rotary also provided scholarships for two students to attend
this highly rated camp.
Additional thanks goes to the
Holman Automotive Group for its
sponsorship of the Playbill for
the Summer Theater Program.
Holmans continued support of
the Recreation Summer Theater
allows the more than 100 children
who participate to have a lasting
memento of their theatrical experience. Encouraging success in
the arts is part of Holmans mission, and the Department of
Parks and Recreation is grateful
to be a recipient of its continued
generosity.
And finally, thank you to two of
the departments Community
Partners MooreKids and Live
Civilly. MooreKids generously provided financial support to 19 children this summer to attend the
Recreation Summer Camps from
Summer Parks to Theater and
many specialized sports camps. Its
continued support of these programs serves its mission: Making
everyday necessities, educational
activities and enrichment opportunities
accessible
to
Moorestowns underserved youth.
In addition, Community Partner Live Civilly provided 525
healthy lunches to all scholarship
participants this year, making its
total numbers for the Summer
Lunch Program more than 3,100
over the last four years.
On behalf of the Department of
Parks and Recreation, we thank
our continued partners for their
commitment to Moorestowns
youth, our special needs families
and those families who struggle
with fundamental necessities.
For information about being a
contributing sponsor to the Special Needs Summer Camp, contact
the department at (856) 914-3093.
