2. Arrangements
Many students consider this topic as one of the most difficult topics in BANK Exams but in
reality this is one area where students can fetch marks easily. But in the recent past these
questions became little tough as arrangements are combined with assignment of objects,
professions, organisations etc. In this chapter we present you a detailed way of doing
arrangement questions.
Arrangements should be done with great attention otherwise if somebody gets struck in the
end, they have to start from beginning which leads to wastage of time. So certain rules for
arrangement are to be followed strictly.
Rules:
1. First count the number of people/objects to be arranged
2. Directions sense is quite important in case of arrangements. In a linear arrangement
where a person is facing north, directions with respect to him are as followed.
Left

Right

X
Directions with respect to that person
3. For a person facing south the directions with respect to him are as followed
X

Right

Left

Directions with respect to X

4. In case of a circular arrangement for a person facing center left with respect to him is in
Clock wise direction and right is anti clock wise direction.

Reasoning Trainee Guide

5. In case of a circular arrangement if a person is facing outside left of that person is Anti
clock wise directions right of him is clock wise direction
Left

Right

6. Understand the statement the correct way

1) A is 2nd to left of B but (and/while) third to right of C means
C__A_B

A
B

C
All the above statements are referring to A only.
2) A is 2nd to left of B who is third to right of C means
C A_ B

C
A

7. When the person in the statement has no relation with the already arranged people then
we should wait till we get some reference or else try all the possibilities. In the first case
we have to arrange them outside the circle and then try to fit that into the arrangement
later on.
Theory for complex Arrangements
In bank exams one of the most common questions we find is assigning professions, sports,
subjects etc for given people based on the given statements. Even though this looks like
time consuming model a simple method can give you answer in 2 or 3 minutes of time
getting you 5 marks.
All of you might know the rules of Sudoku game.
Taking a 5 x 5 Sudoku

Reasoning Trainee Guide

Rules: (Use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) to fill the gaps.

3

No number should be repeated in any column or row.

We can easily say 5 come in place of x as 1, 2, 3 & 4 cant come as repetition is not
allowed.

So in this kind of problems let us take an example where we need to assign 7

subjects and 7 colours for students P,Q,R,S,T,U & V. First step is to make a table
having 3 columns with students in the middle, subjects and colours on both sides of
that.

If somebody is assigned some colour or subject for sure keep it inside of the table if
he cant take up some thing for sure keep it out side
ex:
P Likes Mathematics but doesnt like either blue or black

Blue or Black

Colour

Students

Subjects

Maths

Hindi

M likes Hindi
This way we have to fill up the given data first in the table and then look for the
other clues.

If some thing was written out side the table later we should integrate that in into
table
EX: yellow colour is liked by English student
English Yellow (combination) as we dont know who is that student we have to
write outside and integrate the same in table later.

A study in college X with only B means only two students can study in college X.
