Ph.d (Physical Science)
Maximum Marks: 70
PART-A
NOTE: Answer all questions. Each question carries 8 marks.
Q.1

Consider a quantum mechanical system with a two-dimensional Hilbert space. Let 1

and 2 denote orthonormal basis vectors for this space. With this choice of basis, the
Hamiltonian is given by the matrix

B is being a real number. If at the time t = 0, the system is in state 1 , what will the state
be at a later time t?
Q.2

For 02 , work out the normal modes and normal frequencies of the system. Write the
general solution for x, y as a function of time.
Q.3

For an ideal gas, calculate the Helmholtz potential F as a function of T (temperature), V

(volume) and N (number). Use this to calculate the entropy S as a function of (T, V, N).

Q.4

Consider a metal bar of length 10 cm and square cross-section of 1 cm2. It has a

resistivity and electron density of 10 -8 m and 2 x 10 28 m-3, respectively. A potential
difference of 1 V is applied across the metal bar.
(a) Using Drude model, calculate the relaxation time (the average time between
electronic collisions), .
(b) If a magnetic field of 1 T is applied perpendicular to the bar, what will be the Hall
voltage?
