The Airport Environment
Airport Layout
- Airside: controlled access security area
o
Includes: terminal building dept gates and arrival
halls, freight sorting areas, loading sheds, aircraft
parking and activity areas
o
It is a serious offence to remove without proper
authorization any items from a customscontrolled area, even unused crew meals
o
Aircraft parking and activity areas

Apron Area: A/c are loaded/unloaded and


parked at stands

Ramp: includes apron, service access roads


and equip parking areas

Manoeuvring Area: used by a/c to taxi to and


from rwy. Boundary is equip with double white
line. Restricted to vehicles with radios to
contact ATC/ground control

Movement: Includes apron and manoeuvring


areas

Service Roads and equipment parking areas:


area used by vehicle and equipment to service
aircraft
- Landside: passenger/baggage check in areas, baggage
retrieval areas, restaurants, shops, offices, parking
areas, etc
- Exterior aircraft terms:

NOTES
- Airport Ground Servicing Equipment (GSE)
o
Employees must be trained and certified to
operate GSE
o
Unit Load Devices (USD)

Containers aluminum or fibreglass box


shaped to fit on upper and lower decks

Pallet Strong metal tray on which various


sized of boxed or unboxed cargo can be tied
down

Non-containerised cargo bulk or loose cargo

ULDs MUST not be stacked together, even


when not in use

Belt Loaders

Self propelled vehicle with a continuous


conveyor bely used for loading/ offloading
narrow bodied a/c and bulk of the wide bodied
a/c

Can be raised at either end to the height of the


cargo hold
o
Fork Lift Truck

Highly manoeuvrable and used to move cargo


inside freight sheds and warehouses

Have rapid lift/lower speeds and can handle


very heavy loads

Never used for offloading/loading aircraft


because of their potential damage
o
HI-Loader (Hi-Lo)

Self propelled vehicle with two independent


platforms

Used to lift cargo containers and pallets to


aircraft cargo docks
Main Deck Loader (MDL) larger version of
the Hi-Lo and reaches up to the main deck of
the wide-bodied aircraft
Some stations have local rules that do not let
loaders and other staff to stand on a Hi-loader
platform while lifting
Transporter
Flat back roller bedded truck with a side cab,
specially built to carry containers
Dolly Trains
Carries containers and pallets on separate
trolleys pulled by a small tractor
Aircraft Tug
Used for aircraft push back and towing.
Vary in size, weight and power
ONLY operated by highly trained specialists
Ground Power Unit (GPU)
Portable power unit used to deliver electricity
to a/c during ground servicing
Either trailer or truck mounted
