Grade 4 Assign

1. The document provides instructions for rounding numbers to the nearest ten or hundred. It explains that you identify the place value being rounded to, then look at the digit immediately to its right to determine if the number rounds up or down. 2. If the rounding digit is 5 or higher, you round up by adding 1 to the place value digit. If it is 4 or lower, you round down by adding 0. Then you write all digits to the right as zeros. 3. Examples show 28,716 rounded to the nearest ten is 28,720 and to the nearest hundred is 28,700. Rounding provides approximations and is used when exact values aren't needed, like estimating the cost of a TV.

3. i) If the rounding digit is 5 or higher, round up (add 1
to the place digit).
ii) If the rounding digit is 4 or lower, round down (add
0 to the place digit).

4. All digits to the right of the place digit are written as

zeros. Rewrite the number showing the appropriate
approximation.

So, 28,716 can be approximated as 28,720 when rounded to the
nearest ten and can be approximated as 28,700 when rounded
to the nearest 100.

Notice that the digits to the left of the Place digit remain
unchanged.
Why would you want to round a number?
Rounding is a form of estimation that you use when an
approximation is good enough.

For example when you are buying a TV at the store. The cost
might be marked at $279.00. You could say it is about $300.00.
Exercise: For each of the following, round the number to the
indicated place.

decide whether the number will round up or down and then round
