Week 3 Tutorial 2

1) A car has plunged into a lake and landed on its wheels with a door submerged 8 meters below the surface. The hydrostatic force on the 1 meter wide by 1.2 meter tall door must be determined, along with if the driver can open it. 2) A 2 meter diameter hatch on an inclined wall of an underwater structure must have a minimum air pressure calculated to open when hinged at one edge. 3) A vertical wall separates seawater and freshwater - the required depth of freshwater to produce zero net force on the wall is asked for, as well as if the fluid moment will also be zero.

Pressure Measurement & Hydrostatic Forces

Week 3 - Tutorial 2
1)
A heavy car plunges into a lake during
an accident and lands at the bottom of the lake
on its wheels as shown in the right figure. The
door is 1.2 m high and 1 m wide, and the top
edge of the door is 8 m below the free surface
of the water. Determine the hydrostatic force
on the door and the location of the pressure
center, and discuss if the driver can open the
door.

2)
A structure is attached to the
ocean floor as shown in the right
figure. A 2 m diameter hatch is
located in an inclined wall and
hinged on one edge. Determine the
minimum air pressure, p1, within the
container that will open the hatch.
Neglect the weight of the hatch and
friction in the hinge.

3)
A long, vertical wall separate seawater from freshwater. If the seawater stands at a
depth of 7 m, what depth of freshwater is required to give a zero resultant force on the wall?
When the resultant force is zero will the moment due to the fluid forces be zero? Explain.
4)
An area in the form of an isosceles triangle with a base width of 1.8 m and an altitude
of 2.4 m lies in the plane forming one wall of a tank which contains a liquid having a specific
weight of 12.6 kN/m3. The side slopes upward, making an angle of 60o with the horizontal.
The base of the triangle is horizontal and the vertex is above the base. Determine the resultant
force the fluid exerts on the area when the fluid depth is 6.1 m above the base of the
triangular area. Show, with the aid of a sketch, where the center of pressure is located.
