Data Communications
Frame 1
Data communication is the exchange of any kind of data - in form of files or
messages - in order to manage, operate, or control the network efficiently.
The technology of data communication, including signalling systems, is
based on the Open System Interconnection reference model.
Frame 2
When we need to exchange data between two computer systems, these four
components are always involved.
Frame 3
When the two applications should communicate with each other, they have
to be able to access the transmission medium using the communication tool.
This is where the OSI model is used.
Each of the seven layers in the OSI model has a certain task to perform.
There is an interface between each layer, and each layer exchanges data
only with the next lower or higher layer.
Frame 4
When a layer receives data from the upper layer, it performs the assigned
tasks and adds layer-specific protocol information to the data.
By following this process you can see that it is not only the two applications
or hosts that are communicating with each other. Also each layer is
communicating with its pair, using the lower layers for transmitting the
information.
