Have you ever heard of the noodle burger? Allow me to explain; its like a regular burger, except
the traditional sesame buns are replaced with noodles. Imagine a beef patty with all the yummy
toppings, sandwiched between two noodle buns. Its something you need to see to believe.
Luckily these delicious creations were recently made available in Jakarta thanks to The Stacks
Burger.
This burger joint is located behind Umbra in Kemang. It has a rather quaint ambience that might
remind you of a scene out of Alice in Wonderland. Their open kitchen allows you to see your food
being cooked while youre waiting. Dont forget to bring your smartphone when you visit because
youll definitely want to instagram your noteworthy burgers to show of to your followers.
Although the prices and portions are less than amazing, you should definitely go for the
experience of eating a noodle burger and their quirky atmosphere. Plus theres an ice cream
establishment right next door so you wont have to go far for dessert.

Sacred Basil
Submited on Mon, 13/10/2014 - 2:12

The king of Mediterranean herbs, basil goes well with tomato sauce,
meat dishes, fish, eggs and seafood. Its scent is vaguely
reminiscent of saffron, but also bears traces of cinnamon, liquorice,
mint and cloves. While best known as a staple of Italian cookery,
basil actually originated in India, where Hindus believe that a basil leaf placed on the chest of the deceased is a passport to
paradise.
As a medicinal herb, basil is used to treat a cough, as well as to ease anxiety, stress and insomnia. Thanks to its strong scent, this
plant is used in gardens as a natural repellent to keep insects away from neighbouring plants. Used for preparing soap and
toothpaste, its leaves are similar to those of sage and may be chewed to sweeten the breath. Zero fats, proteins, carbohydrates
and just 15 calories every 100 grams: basil is also ideal for flavouring dishes when on a slimming diet.

GADO-GADO, INDONESIAN VEGGIE MIX SALAD

Submited on Thu, 23/05/2013 - 4:38
http://www.letseatmag.com/recipe/gado-gado-indonesian-veggie-mixsalad

A vegetarian friendly dish, Gado-Gado is one of the most popular

vegetable dishes in Indonesia. All ingredients are easily found in the
market so if youre good at mixing (as the word gado-gado means
to mix all together) this might be a call to get friendlier with your
kitchen and make it.
INGREDIENTS (serves 2)
1 cucumber, thinly sliced
2 tempe(soybean patties)
2 tofu
1 boiled egg cut into 4 pieces.
Blanched
1 cup of string beans cut into 4 cm long pieces
1 cup of shredded cabbage
1 cup of bean sprouts
1 cup of water spinach
Sauce:
1 cup of ground roasted peanuts or peanut butter
3 birds eye chilies
2 teaspoons dried shrimp paste (terasi)
cup palm sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon tamarind
cup water
Method
First for the sauce, grind salt, dried shrimp paste, birds eye chilies, and palm sugar with a mortar and pestle until theyre smooth.
Then add finely ground-roasted peanuts and mix well. If you use peanut butter instead, add less salt. Mix tamarind with cup of
hot water in a small bowl. Add the juice to the sauce and cup of water and mix it well, put aside.
Next, transfer the blanched vegetables to serving plates. Add sliced hard-boiled egg and pour the sauce on top, Garnish with fried
shallots, shrimp or emping crackers. Last, serve with steamed rice or lontong.

Back to the Traffic

Many years ago village life was simple. People walked. If they had to go any
distance they rode horses and carts. It was slow, but hey, what was the hurry?
The industrial revolution changed all that. Steam brought trains and cities were
built. Urban planning had to start to cope with the new city populations.
Cities like Edinburgh in Scotland laid out grand spatial plans leaving enough
room for traffic and pedestrians to enjoy the city with ease. Their plans were
copied by Washington and Philadelphia in the States. They still work to this day.
When things got too busy the planners took the transport underground,
creating networks of lines crisscrossing the cities in London, Paris, New York and
Moscow.
When did all this happen? Over the last 20-30 years? No. Edinburghs city plan
was drawn up in 1765. Londons underground was started in 1890. The
expertise and technology has been with us for 250 years and 120 years
respectively.
Unfortunately no one in Jakarta city government has been to London or Paris or
New York to see how it should be done. They havent even been to Singapore
who did start 30 years ago but have caught up to such an extent that their
system is one of the best in the world.
No we are content to leave all planning to chance, to leave all decisions, not to
the last minute, but well past that. We have a system that doesnt work at all
and we stand back and let it crumble, and with it our hopes of an efficient
economy. Our assumption that people who spend 2 hours in traffic to get to
work will be as efficient and motivated as those in Singapore who take 15
minutes of hassle-free MRT is just nonsense.
We have hopes of a bright tomorrow, but without fixing the most basic element
of our everyday life, those hopes are meaningless. As I have said before and
will say again, the problem is not in three years time when a tiny, under
specified underground line may start, its today with 10 million people trying to
get to work with no assistance from the government at all. No buses, traffic
controllers, no plans, no discipline.
I strongly doubt any international investor will want to waste 4 hours every day
in this chaos. Are you enjoying it? I am (obviously!) not. Is the Jakarta
Government really listening to the people?

What is that? Bells, dogs again! Is it a dream? I sob and cry. See! The door opens, fur-clad men Rush to
my rescue; frail am I; Feeble and dying, dazed and glad. There is the pistol where it dropped. Boys, it was
hard but Im not mad. . . . Look at the clock it stopped, it stopped. Carry me out. The heavens smile.
See! Theres an arch of gold above. Now, let me rest a little while Looking to God and Love . . .and

Lake Toba
Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a simple hut in a farming field.
They did some gardening and fishing for his daily life.
One day, while the man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest catch which he
ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish turned into a beautiful princess. He felt in love with her and proposed
her to be his wife. She said; "Yes, but you have to promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I was once a
fish, otherwise there will be a huge disaster". The man made the deal and they got married, lived happily and
had a daughter.
Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the fields. One day, his daughter
was so hungry and she ate his fathers lunch. Unfortunately, he found out and got furious, and shouted; You
damned daughter of a fish. The daughter ran home and asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad
that her husband had broken his promise.
Then she told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to come. When her daughter
left, she prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. The whole area got flooded
and became Toba Lake. She turned into a fish again and the man became the island of Samosir

CRIMES AND PUNISHMENT

on February 2015 at 7:00 am

From initiating the ERP system to lambasting the death penalty, here is the news you mightve missed
yesterday, compiled for Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
This year, Jakarta Governor Basuki Ahok Tjahaja Purnama plans to finally put the muchdiscussed Electronic Road Pricing system in place.
He expects the ERP system to be installed on at least two of the citys main thoroughfares, Sudirman to
Thamrin Street and Rasuna Said in Kuningan, by the end of the year.
Ive asked all units to prepare for it immediately. I want it to start running this year, the end of the year
at the latest. The ERP system will be running in 2015, he told Bisnis Indonesia at City Hall.
The preparations Ahok mentions involve the ERP Operating Unit at the Jakarta Transportation Agency,
which is charged with setting the tarifs, regulations and tax issues.
The next story concerns the hottest issue in the nation at the moment. Following judge Sarpin
Rizaldis verdict that the Corruption Eradication Commissions (KPK) decision to name
embattled chief of national police candidate Budi Gunawan a suspect is unlawful, a civilian
organisation is already moving to report the judge to the Judicial Commission (KY) and the
Supreme Court (MA).
Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) officer Emerson Yuntho told reporters yesterday that judge Sarpin
had exceeded his authority, saying that he went beyond the Criminal Code Procedures (KUHAP) in
declaring Budi Gunawan a non-suspect.
The judge of a pre-trial hearing has limited authority. A person in that position may only deliver a
verdict on a number of KUHAP, and the declaration of a suspect is not included in that number,
Emerson told Detik at the KPK office.
He said he would also report the judge to the MA for violating ethics. He took the example of a judge in
a Chevron case who also declared a plaintif a non-suspect. The judge has since been demoted.
So were going to ask both of these institutions to investigate this. Sarpin should be fired, he said.
Finally, the United Nations has weighed in on Indonesias recent decision to move forward
several executions of convicted drug dealers, much to the dismay of the government.

Permanent representative of the UN in New York, Desra, said the death penalty carried forward by the
Indonesian Government violates human rights, but not any international laws.
Every country has unique challenges. The application of this law is the governments response to
Indonesias challenges and is a part of its independent right, he said.
He said the application of the death penalty in Indonsia was not an extrajudicial or a summary or
arbitrary execution, both of which are human right violations, but are legal actions that have been
given due process of law.
He added that the penalty was not being applied to all drug related convictions, such as drug abuse by
teenagers or foreign tourists arrested for using drugs, only in the most recent case involving two
convicted Australian drug traffickers.

LEARNING HABIT
on February 2015 at 4:00 pm
http://jjk.co.id/culture/learning-habit
Getting your little ones to focus can be tricky.
Have you ever faced a mid-afternoon concentration crash at the office? If you have, then you should
understand full well what it feels like. This, surprisingly enough, happens to children too.
To focus and study can be a bit of a burden for kids, as theyd rather spend their time at leisure. The
attention span of children has decreased noticeably over the years, especially with the introduction of video
games. Children dont get involved in much physical activity, which subsequently makes them indolent,
preventing them from getting their homework done.
The trick here is to turn childrens chores into fun activities. During their study time at home, refrain from
repeating the facts and figures they already have in their textbooks. Your children will probably have been or
will be taught about them at school by their teachers, so you should play around with your approach. As
parents, we should think outside of the box and introduce a more imaginative method of studying to our
kids. For example, if your children are having problems with their math assignments, mix your strategy by
including a bit of fun and games to avoid boring your offspring to death. Setting aside time to sit down with
your kids on a daily basis can be tough, especially if you work during the day, but if you do manage to solve
this scheduling conundrum, itll work wonders. Remember that such occasions should not be limited to
school matters. Let your children sit down and read the books that they choose to read, and be there when
they have questions about their reading material. This will relieve some of the pressure that is put upon your
children to study, and they will also learn at the same time.
It is essential to always listen to your children. Gaining an understanding of what they like to learn can be
invaluable when it comes to educating them. Many parents let their children study day in and day out
without any respite or reward, other than assuring them that they can play at the weekend. If your children
tell you theyre tired, perhaps they truly have exhausted all their brainpower and need a break. Use your
judgement and be wise, but with heart. If you treat your children like adults and with respect, they will in
time learn what to do and what not to do by themselves.

Two significant factors in the learning process of your children are discipline and responsibility. As parents,
it is our duty to remind our children never to give up on a task that they find difficult. Even adults can end
up on the verge of quitting what they started. Yet if you instil a never-say-die attitude in your young uns
from an early age, youll end up a proud parent. Show them the many different ways that problems can be
solved, and be imaginative. This will encourage your children to be more creative when working out
solutions to their future undertakings. Also, remind them of the importance of responsibility in life. It is their
responsibility to finish their homework, so emphasise that.
As far as being a tough disciplinarian parent, modern children may find facing such a figure in life arduous.
However, it is crucial for parents to enforce strict rules for their little ones, as long as they are logical and
reasonable. More importantly, give your children your full attention and be an example to them. After all,
kids always look up to their parents first.
