Problem Set 1

This document outlines 19 problems related to analysis and measure theory that are part of a course on Analysis II: Measure and Integration taught in January-April 2016. The problems cover topics such as sketching functions, analyzing continuity and differentiability, limits of sequences and functions, Riemann integration, and properties of open and closed sets. For example, problem 1 asks students to sketch various functions, problem 4 considers whether continuity follows from a limit condition, and problem 14 relates uniform convergence to Riemann integration.

Problem set 1 (Preliminaries)

1. Sketch the following functions:

(a) x, x2 , x3 , |x|, x|x|, sin x, exp(x), exp(x) in R
(b) log x, sin( x1 ), x sin( x1 ) in (0, )
2. Analyze the continuity and differentiability of the above functions. Construct a function which
is n-times differentiable nut not n + 1 times.

3. Let f (x) = in (0, 1) where 0 < 1. Is f continuous? What about uniform continuity?

4. Suppose f is a real function defined on R that satisfies lim (f (x + h) f (x h)) = 0, x R.
h0

Does this imply that f is continuous?

5. Check right and left discontinuities of the largest integer function [x] and fractional function
{x} = x [x].

b) Prove that the convergence of xn implies the convergence of |xn |. What about converse?
7. Prove that any countable union of open sets is open and countable intersection of closed sets

union of closed sets (known as F sets).
8. Show that lim xn lim xn (Recall x = lim xn = sup inf xk and x = lim xn = inf sup xk ).

10. Let E be the set of cluster points of {xk }. Then, show that x = sup E and x = inf E. (l is
called a cluster point of xk if every neighborhood of l contains a point from {xk }).
11. Give lower and upper limits of sequence of sets.
