All questions may be attempted but only marks obtained on the best five solutions will
count.

The use of an electronic calculator is permitted in this examination.

1.

(a) Find jjjf for

(z)

y = (1 + sm x)

(ii)

(Hi)

y = -

y = tan"1 (2tani) .

(b) If y = x cos 2x, find ^ i.e. the seventh derivative of y with respect to x.
(c) A curve is given by x = i5 + f3 and y = t2 + It . Find jjjf and .

2.

(a) Show that e~z < j^, for a: > 0.

(Hint: you may want to use one of the

properties of a derivative).

(b) Let f(x,y,z) = iV+I' Find g, g and f .

(b) Find the area bounded by the curves y = v/4la^.4l+2 ant* V = ~ ^43,2+41+2 anc^
by the lines x = 0 and x = 1.

4.

(a) Solve

(a) Define carefully the dot and vector products of two vectors a and b.

(b) Find a unit vector which is perpendicular to the plane containing the points

(1,0,1), (1,2,3) and (0,1,1).

(c) The three points (1,0,-1),(1,0,1) and (1,2,1) form the vertices of a triangle.
Find, using vector methods, the area of the triangle.

Find also the angle

between the two sides of the triangle which meet at (1,0, 1).

6.

(a) Evaluate the integral

Jo

using the rectangular rule with 3 equal intervals and using the trapezoidal rule
with 3 equal intervals. Compare your answers with the actual value.

(b) Use Newton's method to find an approximate value of y/2 to an accuracy of 1

decimal place starting at x = 1.

7.

(a) Four dice are rolled, find the probability that the sum is equal to 6.

(b) Write down the binomial distribution for x successes in n independent trials,

each with probability p of success. Write down the mean (i.e. expectation) \i
and the variance of this distribution.

(c) A factory produces cars. The probability that a randomly selected car is de
fective is given by p = 0.01.

What is the probability that there are more than 3 defective cars in a random
sample of 100 cars.

(d) Write down the Poisson distribution with mean /z.

(e) Gas supply failures occur according to a Poisson distribution with an average
of 2 failures every 365 days. Calculate the probability that there will not be
more than one failure during a particular week.
