The Huck
Fastening
System

Hucks Groove Proportioned (GP) Lockbolt Fastener is

a high-strength, close-toleranced aerospace fastener
designed for use in both interference and clearance fit
conditions. Common applications include fuselage panels, wing
spars and wing splice stringers.
The GP Fasteners is a member of Hucks Lockbolt family, used in
aircraft for over 45 years. Unlike threaded fasteners, Lockbolts
install rapidly and cannot vibrate loose. Their unique design
assures predictable, consistent clamp.

1. The pin is inserted from one

side of the work surface through
the prepared hole. The collar is
placed over the pintail.

with nose assembly is placed
over the pintail.

High Tensile and Clamp

3.

Chuck jaws, housed in the nose

assembly, grip the pintail grooves.
The installation tool trigger is
depressed, actuating the tool pull
piston. The tool pull piston and
chuck jaws move rearward; pulling
the pin into the hole, seating the
head, and eliminating the gap
between work surfaces. The nose
assembly outer sleeve, housing a
swage die, moves forward toward
the work surface, swaging the
collar material into the pins locking grooves. This provides a permanent lock between the pin and collar.

4.

When collar swaging is complete, the tool continues to pull

until the pin breaks (at a predetermined force) at the breakneck. The tool trigger is released
and the nose assembly with tool
is pushed off the installed fastener,
completing the installation cycle.
This entire installation sequence
occurs in less than two seconds.

The GP Fastener features a

tapered root diameter and variable pitch lock groove. A larger
volume of collar material flows
into the locking grooves at the
beginning of the installation
sequence. This gives the fastener
its greatest tensile strength where
it is most crucial at the sheet
line where axial tensile loads
and bending moments are the
highest.
The locking grooves 20 degree
flank angle serves as a platform
for retaining the high clamp load
that develops during the initial
swaging action and for maintaining the residual clamp load
after the installation sequence is
completed.

Fastener Identification

Installs On Slopes
Because the GP Fastener can
be consistently installed on
slopes up to 7 degrees, it
eliminates heavy, costly selfaligning washers and special
nuts. Inventory costs as well as
structural weight are reduced.
Fewer parts to handle translates
into greater labor efficiency.

The labor-intensive job of

overcoating each fastener or
the use of heavy, costly sealing
nuts is eliminated with GP
Fasteners. Annular grooves on
the pin form a series of separate
barriers to prevent fuel see page.
Fay sealant flow during installation ensures reliable sealing.
Quiet InterferenceFit Installation
Hucks new Pull-In Fastening
System for use with GP fasteners cuts the noise level in
interference-fit fastener installations by more than 50%.
Noisy rivet hammers are
replaced with a Pull-In nose
assembly that attaches to
standard Huck tools. Rather
than pneumatically pounding
fasteners at a bone-jarring
110 dBA, this system gently
pulls fasteners into place. The
Pull-In nose assembly operates
at just 50 dBA when attached
to Hucks hydraulic installation
tool and at 75 dBA with the
pneumatic model.

Manufacturers option: Huck mark or raised square on end or O.D.

of collar (06 diameter and larger).

Assembly quality improves

because the Huck System
hydraulically clamps the work
pieces together during the entire
cycle of hole drilling, fastener
insertion and collar swaging.
Both offset and in-line models
are available for use with 5/32
thru 3/8 diameter GP stump
type fasteners.
The future in fastener
technology.

Only from Huck.

The Huck Fastening System consists of three separate components

that function as a single operating unit.
1. Fastener:
GP tension-type fasteners are available in a wide range of
diameters and grip lengths, and a variety of materials and finishes.
2. Nose Assembly:
Nose assemblies provide a link between the fastener and the
installation tool. Each is designed to install a specific fastener
diameter. They can be easily attached to and removed from
installation tools.
3. Installation Tool:
Huck tooling is available in three configurations:
1. Pneumatic hand-held systems which are powered by 90-100
psi air pressure.
2. Hydraulic hand-held systems which are powered by Huck
POWERIG Hydraulic units.
3. Automated Drivmatic drill riveter systems which can be
mounted on drill riveter lower rams.
Pin Position and Swage Gage part numbers are listed for each fastener diameter and type. These gages are designed to inspect installed
fastener grip and collar swage.
Additional information on installation tooling for the GP Huckbolt
fastener, including a complete listing of nose assemblies, tools and
power units, can be found in the Huck Aerospace Installation
