Boundary Layer

This document contains a problem set from a fluid mechanics course involving boundary layer flow over flat plates. It includes: 1) Plots of common laminar boundary layer velocity profile equations and a discussion of their similarities and differences. 2) An evaluation of whether a proposed new velocity profile equation satisfies the relevant boundary conditions. 3) Calculations of boundary layer thickness, skin friction coefficient, wall shear stress, and drag coefficient for flow over a flat plate under both laminar and turbulent boundary layer assumptions. 4) Use of given equations to determine drag coefficient and boundary layer thickness and compare to results from the earlier calculations, including a sketch of the plate with boundary layers.

2. This is another proposed equation for the velocity profile in a boundary layer close to a flat plate:

+ (! )! . Does this satisfy all the boundary conditions relevant for this system?

3. Water flows at 1m/s past a flat plate of length 1m in the flow direction.. Evaluate the boundary layer thickness (at end of
plate), skin friction coefficient (at end of plate), wall shear stress (at end of plate), and drag coefficient if:
a) You can assume that the boundary layer is turbulent right from the leading edge
b) You can assume that the boundary layer is maintained laminar throughout.

4. The expressions for the drag coefficient and boundary layer thickness (at the end) for a flat plate, with a critical Re of
5x105, are given as:

Use these equations to determine the drag coefficient and boundary layer thickness at the end of the plate for the system in
problem (3) and compare with the results you obtained earlier. Make a sketch of the plate with boundary layers indicated.
