Chapter2:SystemDesign

Andalay Solar systems require 80% fewer parts than ordinary solar
systems; the simplicity of having fewer parts transfers directly into
theeaseofthedesignprocess.AndalaySolarpanelsmaybeoriented
in either a portrait mode or a landscape mode. Portrait mode
minimizesroofpenetrationsandACwiring,resultinginfasterinstalla
tion times. Landscape mode may also be used for added flexibility.
The design of the Andalay Solar Power System also accommodates
mixedportraitandlandscapeinstallations.

Beforedevelopingadesignlayout,befamiliarwithAndalaySolarpanelsuniqueparameters.AsAndalay
Solarpanelsareconnectedtogether,theyformarigidstructure,andnotsinglerowsofpanelsoninde
pendentrackingsystemsaswithordinarysolarpanels.TheframesofAndalaySolarpanelsiswherethe
grooveisaccessibleandwillserveasconnectionbetweenthearrayandthechosenroofmounting
solution.ThestainlesssteelAndalaySolarsplicesgroundsandconnectspanelsintheEastWestdirec
tionserveasstructuralcomponents.ThestainlesssteelGBoltmechanicallyattachesandgroundsthe
arrayintheNorthSouthdirection,andenablessharingoffootingsbetweenthefirstandsecondrows
(andallconsecutiverowsuntilthetopofarray).Inanarraylayout,includea1gapbetweenrowsin
North/SouthdirectiontoaccommodatetheinstallationofNorth/Southbrackets.
RefertotheTechnicalEvaluationReporttodeterminemaximumallowableanchorspacing.Panelswhich
overhangthelastfootinginarowmaystickoutnomorethanamaximumof16"fromthatfooting.The
completeddesignlayoutshouldincludetheplanlayout,specificationsheets,andBOM.Foreveryproj
ect,thedesignerinchargemustverifyanystructuralengineeringreviewrequirementswithlocalAHJ
officialsandobtainaprofessionalstructuralengineeringstamp(P.E.)ifneeded.Alternatively,Andalay
Solarcanprovideengineeringservicesand/oraP.E.stampforwindandseismiccalculationsatanaddi
tionalcost.

2.4:ThermalExpansionConsiderations
Forthermalexpansion,includea1gapforeverymorethan17Modules(portrait)orevery10Modules
(landscape). For bigger configurations, you may place separate arrays next to each other to give the
appearanceofasinglearray,ifdesired.

To ensure proper grounding from the Module frame to the microinverter after replacing the micro
inverter,attachaGroundingLugtotheModuleasshowninStep3ofSection4.6,andthenroutean
equipmentgroundingconductortothemicroinverterchassis.PleaserefertotheEnphaseUserManual
forinstallationinstructionsandrecommendedtorquespecifications.
Note:YouneedonlyremovetheaffectedModulefromthearraytoserviceorreplaceitsmicroinverter.
