What are the basic components of a computer? Draw and explain briefly? (6m)

Diagram 2.0 basic components of a computer system

Computer system contain 4 part that is the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Main Memory,
Input-Output, and System Interconnection (bus system).

Input/output
Data and instruction must enter the computer system before any computation can be
performed on the supplied data. The input unit that links the external environment with the
computer system performs tis task.

The job of an output unit is just the reverse of that of an input unit. It supplied information
and results of computation to the outside world. Thus it links the computer with the eternal
environments.

Main Memory
The data and instruction that are entered into the computer system through input units have to
be stored inside the computer before the actual processing starts. Similarly, the results
produced by the computer after processing must also be kept someone inside the computer
system befre being passed on to the output units.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)


The main unit inside the computer is the CPU. This unit is responsible for all events inside
the computer. It controls all internal and external devices, performs arithmetic and logical
operations. The operations a microprocessor performs are called instruction set of this
processor.

System Interconnection
All the data feed in into the storage unit need to be transferred into the correct devices. This
system interconnection are directing the data to the locations. It interests the instruction
fetched into the computer, determines what data, if any, are needed, where it is stored, where
to store the results of the operation, and sent the control signal to the devices involved in the
execution of the instructions.

Explain TWO methods used to measure processor performance. (4m)


a. Response time
i. Total amount of time it takes to respond a request for service. In
service can be any unit of work from a simple disk IO to loading a
compex web page.
b. Latency
i. Latency is a time delay between the cause and the effect of some
physical change in the system being observed. Latency is a result of
the limited velocity with which any physical interaction can take place.

Processor performance has increased tremendously over the year. However, it needs
to be manipulated fully to optimize the overall performance of the computer. Explain
briefly THREE ways how to solve the problem of slow data transfer between the
memory and processor to overcome this overall performance issue. (4m)

a. Change Hard Drive


i. One if the most common cause of a slow computer is a fragmented
hard disk drive. Once a hard disk is detected to be fragmented, user can
change the hard drive. HDD is a common use, but user can also change
to SDD which is faster in term of performance.
b. Uninstalled application & unused windows registry
i. When uninstall software on windows, the uninstaller doesnt
necessarily remove everything from your computer. While you can
employ the cleaner utility to remove software completely.
c. Permanent Temporary Files
i. To many temporary folders are supposed to make using windows and
your browse faster by providing easily-accessed files that can be
loaded up extremely quickly. This might be data that is downloaded
from the web or required by other applications.

When hard disk drive become over 90& full, you will find that the
performance are dips markedly. In order to prevent this, user need to
delete your windows temp files and clean your web browser.
