Abstract: Research Directions for the Internet of Things
As the Internet of Things (IoT) matures and supports increasingly sophisticated applications, the
research needs for IoT also expand considerably. This talk discusses major research directions for the
future IoT where billions or even trillions of devices are connected to the Internet. A brief discussion
on the relationship of IoT, to Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN)
is given. Research topics covered include massive scaling, properties of the required architecture,
new types of interdependencies that arise across simultaneously executing IoT applications, creating
knowledge and big data, robustness and safety, problems due to openness, security, privacy, and
humans in the loop. The list of topics is not meant to be comprehensive, but does address many of
the main research issues. For some of the research problems, ideas for solutions and for promising
research directions are also presented.

Abstract: Data Centre Network Interconnections (Inter and Intra)
& Virtualisation in Transport Networks
Success will require an industrial business strategy that consolidates isolated systems, and considers
how key platforms integrate and converge, including cloud, mobility, and data and the Internet of
Things. This presentation will take a holistic view and methodology, as these business and technology
forces will have a profound impact on the network layers, creating unprecedented strategic
opportunities and develop a new roadmap for success. These new networks must be increasingly
simple, smart and secure, and enables you act, adapt and respond quickly to requests and events.
Several key drivers shape the future of the photonic network ranging from dierent business
operational models, global growth of applications and thus bandwidth, data center footprint and
interconnectivity to the explosion of devices and industrialization of IT, which will be reviewed.
Discover how photonic networking technology convergence oers a path to a photonic nation
to contest operational complexities, enabling a new fundamental model applicable to dierent
industries, and driving new services and capabilities.

Abstract: Beyond Illumination: Internet of Lights
In line with the governmental plans worldwide to phase out incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs in
favor of more energy-ecient lighting technologies, it is predicted that light emitting diodes (LEDs) will
be the ultimate light source in the near future. Besides indoor illumination, LEDs are widely used in street
lamps, car headlights/taillights, trac signs, outdoor displays, etc. The expected wide-scale availability of
LEDs opens the door for Internet of Lights where the light source becomes a wireless access point. LEDs
can be modulated at very high speeds on the order of gigabits per second, making it possible to transmit
data without noticeable eect on lighting output and human eye. Dual use of LEDs for lightning and
communication purposes presents a revolutionary solution for wireless communications. The ongoing
international standardization activity within IEEE 802.15.7r Task Group is expected to further accelerate
the developments in the emerging field of visible light communications (VLC). This talk will provide an
overview of fundamentals of VLC and its various application areas ranging from indoor wireless access to
vehicular communications. It will further present recent advances in VLC highlighting potential technology
candidates for inclusion in the new IEEE standard.

Abstract: Energy-ecient Synchronization in Wireless Sensor Networks
With the advent of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in sensing and control of domestic, industrial
and military applications, a number of fundamental challenges shall be addressed to ensure their
proper functioning. These include energy management, nodes synchronization, and data processing
techniques. This lecture addresses the energy-ecient WSN synchronization problem from a signal
processing perspective in which the parameter to estimate is the pairwise clock oset between WSN
nodes. Information-theoretic limits such as the Cramer-Rao lower bound are employed to define the
optimal trade-o between clock oset estimation accuracy and energy employed in the process of
parameter estimation. Moreover, the performance of such optimal trade-o is explored for dierent
wireless fading channel scenarios, including large-scale fading, small scale fading, correlated channels,
and various types of stochastic disturbances in the measured clock oset. Convex optimization tools,
optimal control strategies and network coding techniques are combined in order to meet the desired
clock oset estimation error and network reliability levels in the WSN.

Destination Prague
The Mother of Towns, The Golden City, or The City of a Hundred Spires, these are just a few
of the many attributes that the Czech metropolis nestling above the river Vltava has earned for itself.
Prague as a major destination of visitors arriving in the Czech Republic, with its appeal of architectural
monuments of all styles, the traditional hospitality of its people and the excellent beer served
by Czech pubs, as well as the remarkable mix of Czech, German and Jewish cultures, is considered
one of the most beautiful cities, and not just in Europe. The area on which Prague was founded
was settled as early as the Paleolithic age. Around 200 BC the Celts had a settlement in the south,
called Zvist, but later they were replaced by the Marcomanni, a Germanic people and later
by the West Slavic people. According to legends, Prague was founded by Libue and her husband,
Pemysl, founder of the dynasty of the same name. Whether this legend is true or not, Pragues first
nucleus was a castle on a hill commanding the left (western) bank of Vltava: this is known as Prague
Castle, to dierentiate from another castle, which was later, in the latter part of the 9th century
erected on the opposite right (eastern) bank the Pemyslid fort Vyehrad, which is now wrongly
considered as the oldest one. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Prague has become one of Europes
(and the worlds) most popular tourist destinations. It is the sixth most-visited European city after
London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin. Prague suered considerably less damage during World War
II than some other major cities in the region, allowing most of its historic architecture to stay true
to form. It contains one of the worlds most pristine and varied collections of architecture, from Art
Nouveau to Baroque, Renaissance, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-Classical and ultra-modern.
