Comparing and Contrasting Book Characters


*Lesson plan based on a 50-minute class
Purpose/rationale:
Students will discuss, in small groups, specific similarities and differences between the
characters Junior and Rowdy in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, which they
have recently finished reading as a class. In their small groups students will create a Venn
diagram poster to present to the class. The purpose of this activity is to have students engage in a
literary text with their newly developed understanding of the comparison and contrast technique.
This small group activity will prepare students to build on a comparison contrast essay the class
will wright on the novel at the end of the unit.
Common Core Standards:
LAFS.910.RL.4.10: By the end of grade 9, read and comprehend literature, including stories,
dramas, and poems, in the grades 9-10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as
needed in the high end of the range.
LAFS.910.RL.1.3: Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting
motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters and advance the plot
or develop the theme.
LAFS.910.W.3.9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis,
reflection, and research.

Poster board (6 pieces - one for each group of 5)

Anticipatory set: (2 minutes)


Teacher will have desks arranged into groups of 5, and have names students organized into
groups projected on the board. Students will take seats according to temporary seating chart.
Teacher will take attendance. Teacher will ask students to take out homework from the following
night, and walk around to check for a completion grade.

If the projector or computer does not work the teacher will verbally direct students into their
groups. If the students do not behave and work diligently in their small groups, then they will be
given individual Venn diagram worksheets to complete with quotations from their books.
