Soil Mechanics

The document contains multiple soil mechanics questions regarding properties of soil including void ratio, soil compaction costs, permeability of soils, and effective stress. Specifically, it provides details on an experiment measuring the weight of a soil sample at different stages to calculate void ratio. It also provides information on estimating fill costs for a building based on available material and void ratios. There are additional questions regarding calculating permeability of a permeable soil layer and determining effective stress at the mid-height of a clay layer overlain by sand.

Soil Mechanics

Properties of Soil
In an experiment of determining the porosity and specific gravity of solids of a soil,
a soil is dug out from the ground, weighed, then oven dried, and then saturated with
water. The weight of soil taken form the test hole is 1346 grams. It was then ovendried and weighed 1076 grams. After saturating it with water, it weighed 1462
grams. The volume of the test hole was then measured and found to be 792 cubic
centimeter. Determine the void ratio of the soil.

Soil Compaction
A building requires a 10,000 m3 fill at a void ratio of 20%. Material for earth fill was
available form a borrow site at 321.5 pesos per cubic meter. It was found that the
average void ratio from the site is 80%. Estimate the total cost of fill.

Permeability
A permeable soil is underlain by an impervious layer, as shown in figure. For the
permeable layer, k= 0.0048 cm/sec, H = 3 meters and = 5. Calculate the total
amount of water percolated per
day per meter width, in cubic
meter.

Effective Stress
A clay layer 25 feet thick is overlain with 50 feet thick of sand (G = 2.71). The water
table is 20 feet below the sand (ground) surface. The saturated unit weight of clay is
141 pcf. The sand below the water table has a unit weight of 128 pcf. The sand
above the water table has average moisture content of 20%. After drying, the sand
was found to have a dry unit weight of 92 pcf. Determine the effective stress at the
mid-height of the clay layer.
