Students will engage in basic library skills including but not
limited to:
Finding books in fiction and non-fiction using the alphabet
and DDS

from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms
effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each

Overview:
Students will use the online catalog to search book titles, authors, subjects,
series and genres. Students will be able to use the catalog to determine if a
book is available in the LMC or in district, the synopsis and the call letters of
the book, as well as, if the book is part of a series. We will follow the process of
Final Product:
An online Library Quest created to be accessed on the iPad in order to find the
necessary pieces of information in a scavenger hunt.
Library Lesson(s):
The reasons for cataloging and organization will be explained (ie. Libraries are
organized uniformly so that no matter where you go in the world, you will be able
to access information at a library)
Assessment
Product:
The completed Library Quest on iPads.
Process:
Students will sit for the beginning of the lesson to get a brief overview of the
catalog on the overhead. Then we will walk through finding the book on the
shelf from the information in the catalog.
The Library Quest will be explained and we will engage in locating several
pieces of information and add it to the quest together. Students will then be
put into teams to perform the quest on their own. Finally, they will locate a
book they are interested in though browsing the catalog.

Direct Instruction:
Putting the catalog on the overhead, we will explore the catalog while students
watch. We will use books from the shelf to explain how they are placed on the
shelves. We will go over searching using the catalog, take a look at how the record
is displayed and recognizing important information about the record.
Modeling and Guided Practice:
Searching together to locate various records online. Students will then be given
various items in the catalog to search for then add them to the Library Quest.
Independent Practice:
In teams, students will engage in a library quest to find several books and records
in the online catalog. See the attached directions for students.
Sharing and Reflecting:
Students will then use the online catalog to locate one book, by browsing, that
they would be interested in reading and locate it on the shelf. We will discuss the
value of knowing how to locate things in the library and how they will now know
how to find items in almost any library as the catalog and organization is uniform.
