TIPS FOR MANAGING YOUR CHRONIC DISEASE RISK FACTORS


Body Mass Index
Include at least 30 minutes of any aerobic exercise for a minimum
of 5 times weekly in your daily schedule. You can split it up to 2-3 se
ssions of 10-15 minutes each.
Look for opportunities to walk instead of using a vehicle in your dail
y activities.
Try to maintain a balanced diet without any excess carbohydrates
or fats/oils.
Avoid fried foods, processed foods and sweetened beverages.
In case your BMI is very high, consult your doctor before undertakin
g any exercise program and take the help of a nutritionist to design a
weight loss diet for you.
Blood Pressure
Strive to maintain an ideal BMI.
Make an effort to consciously reduce the amount of salt in your diet.
Always try to avoid processed or preserved foods because they con
tain very high levels of salt.
Even if your BMI and weight are in the normal range, regular aerobi
c exercise has a protective effect on your blood pressure levels.
Smoking or nicotine use in any form tends to raise your blood press
ure.
Stress is present in every aspect of our lives; this constantly stressf
ul environment has an impact on your blood pressure; try to find time
for activities which relax you.
For borderline BP, measure it twice weekly for 4 weeks and consult
your physician if readings are continuously high; for hypertension, ple
ase consult your physician immediately.

Blood Sugar
Control your calorie intake.
Regular aerobic exercise.
Avoid sweetened drinks and beverages which contain an excess of
sugars.
Try to avoid smoking or using any nicotine products.
If you are overweight or obese to start off with, losing weight has a
protective effect against developing diabetes later in life; if your weig
ht is normal, try to maintain it throughout your life.
If you find that despite all lifestyle changes, your blood sugar levels
are beyond the normal range over a period of months, consult your p
hysician for effective control of your blood sugar levels.
Cholesterol
Identify the constituents in your diet which have a high cholesterol l
evel (usually red meat, saturated fats/oils) and reduce their consumpt
ion
In addition, there are certain foods like high fibre cereals, fish and w
alnuts which help in lowering your cholesterol levels and reduce healt
h risks.
Regular exercise has a beneficial effect by reducing the harmful ch
olesterol in your blood and also acts by increasing the good cholest
erol levels
You should try to cut down or give up consumption of alcohol which
leads to high cholesterol levels.
For elevated cholesterol levels, please consult your physician for m
edical advice and management.
