Design of Bevel Gears Used in Differential

1) The document describes the design of a sun-planet pair for a differential with specific manufacturing assumptions and data. 2) Key specifications include a power to the planet of 2.5 kW, planet speed of 450 rpm, sun gear with 35 teeth and planet gear with 23 teeth. 3) Calculations are shown for pitch diameters, equivalent numbers of teeth, load factors, and design loads to check that the design is safe based on allowable stresses and wear load.

DESIGN

OF
DIFFERENTIAL

BEVEL

GEARS

USED

IN

Since the bevel gears are not interchangeable therefore bevel gears
are design in pairs . In this study of the project differential. There
should be required 5 pair (6 no) of bevel gear to manufacture. We
have considered for simple design the SUN PLANET pair with the
following consideration. Some assumptions are also introduced for
the manufacturing limitations and facilities available in our existing
mechanical workshop.

ASSUMPTIONS
We have consider the following assumptions
1.
2.
3.
4.

The pitch angles for every gears are same taken as 45 O.

Gears are made of same materials excepts crown (C.I.).
Module (m) of each gear is constant which is taken as 2.
Tooth profile for each gear is consider as 20 o (pressure angle)
involute type.

DESIGN OF SUN PLANET PAIR

MANUFACTURING DATA

Power to planet, P = 2.5 KW

Speed of planet, NP = 450 rpm
No. of teeth in SUN, TG = 35
No. of teeth in PLANET, TP = 23
Pitch angle for Bolt is same, P1 = P2 = 45o
Module is also same for all gear, m = 2 mm
Pressure angle for Involute tooth profile, = 20o

PITCH DIAMETER OF SUN

m= DG/TG
Pitch dia of SUN, DG = mTG = 235 = 70 mm
Pitch dia of PLANET, DP = mTP = 223 = 46 mm
Thus formative (equivalent) no of teeth
for gear (SUN),
TEG = TG/cos P2 = 35/cos45o = 49.5
For PLANET,
TEP = TP/cosP1 = 23/cos45o = 32.5
For 20 Involute profile the tooth form factor
yP = 0.154 (0.912/TEP) = 0.126.For PLANET
yG = 0.154 (0.912/TEG) = 0.156For SUN
Thus factors are also called Lewis factor
Here as yP < yG
Therefore the PLANET (pinion) should be weaker than SUN (gear).
Also as both the gears are made of same materials (as MS) therefore
PLANET is the weaker. Thus design should be based upon the planet.
