Abstract On UPS

This document summarizes a project to design and implement a 1000W 230V 50Hz uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The UPS uses a rectification process to convert AC input to DC which is stored in batteries during power, and then uses integrated circuits and semiconductors to invert the 12V DC from the batteries to 230V AC output. It provides emergency power when mains power fails by supplying stored battery energy. The UPS is intended to provide short term power for a few minutes to allow proper shutdown of protected equipment.

Design and Implementation of 1KW Uninterrupted Power Supply

Abstract
The purpose of this project is to design and implement a 1000Watts (1KW)
230 Volts UPS at a frequency of 50Hz. This device is to be constructed with the
materials of regulated standards. The basic principle of its operation includes
rectification and inversion process. During presence of power supply, rectifier is
used to convert AC to DC and store it in batteries. During power outs, a simple
conversion of 12V DC from a battery using integrated circuits and semiconductors
at a frequency of 50Hz, to a 230V AC across the windings of a transformer.
Introduction:
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that
provides emergency power to a load when the input power source, typically mains
power,

fails.

A UPS

differs

from

an

auxiliary

or emergency

power

system or standby generator in that it will provide near-instantaneous protection

from input power interruptions, by supplying energy stored in batteries, or
supercapacitors.

The on-battery runtime of most uninterruptible power sources is relatively

short (only a few minutes) but sufficient to start a standby power source or
properly shut down the protected equipment.
The primary role of any UPS is to provide short-term power when the input
power source fails. However, most UPS units are also capable in varying degrees
of correcting common utility power problems:
1. Voltage spike or sustained overvoltage
2. Momentary or sustained reduction in input voltage
3. Noise, defined as a high frequency transient or oscillation, usually injected
into the line by nearby equipment
4. Instability of the mains frequency
5. Harmonic
