CVEN90035 Design in Steel and Other Materials
You are required to develop 2 conceptual design solutions for the structure to cater for two
different conditions as described in the following:
Design Solution #1
The design of the structure should aim at optimizing the use of beams which are in support
of the conveyor belt and the walkways given that the structure is founded on a shallow layer
of stiff and stable soil overlying bedrock (ie. good ground conditions). Thus, it is economical
to design pad footings and columns at close spacing to support the structure.
Design Solution #2
The design of the structure for option #2 should aim at minimizing the use of columns and
foundations given that the structure is founded on a deep layer of weak expansive clay (ie.
poor ground conditions). Piles which are much more expensive to install than pad footings
will be required for load transfer.
Your design solutions should consider the clients functional requirements as well as
structural adequacy in compliance with the requirements of the standards whilst being
economical to build.
Sketches showing elevations, sections and plans of the supporting structure should be
provided to demonstrate viable load paths and structural stability. Approximate calculations
should also be provided to demonstrate structural adequacies of the columns and beams in
both the longitudinal and transverse directions at critical locations. Detailed design and
calculations for bracing members and connections are not required. Refer the attached
check list when preparing your report.
