Experimental Design Diagrams: Name: Anna and Bailey HR: 8th

1) An experiment was conducted to determine how the amount of water in the bottom of a rocket affects how far it travels. Trials were conducted using 500mL, 1000mL (the control), and 1500mL of water. 2) The results showed that 1000mL of water in the bottom produced the greatest average distance of 62.3 meters, while 500mL and 1500mL both produced shorter average distances. 3) The conclusion is that the hypothesis that less water would produce greater distance was only partially correct - an intermediate amount of 1000mL worked best, rather than too little or too much water. Future experiments could test more precise water amounts and ensure accurate measurement.

A. How will amount of water on the bottom affect how far the rocket will go?
B. If the bottom has less water in it then it will go higher because the weight of the amount of water
will bring it down.

My amount of water on the bottom affects how high my rocket goes

5 controlled variables:
75 psi, label off, right triangle, 15cm long, 11 cm out, 3 fins, 20oz top, 2 liter bottom, 100ml top,
top cap on
Materials:
Rocket (Control Rocket: -75 psi, label off, right triangle, 15cm long, 11 cm out, 3 fins, 20oz top, 2 liter
bottom, 100ml top, 1000 ml in bottom, top cap on), rocket launcher, meter stick, cardboard, open and
top bottle, some way to measure, water, open field
Procedure:
Build rocket following the control rocket (Control Rocket: -75 psi, label off, right triangle, 15cm
long, 11 cm out, 3 fins, 20oz top, 2 liter bottom, 100ml top, 1000 ml in bottom, top cap on). So to create
the rocket you take a 2 liter and a 20 oz and put the cap tops on opposite sides facing out, duck tape them
together by rolling it around and around the bottles. Then duck tape the wings on with the required sizes
and you are good. Put 100 ml in the 20 oz bottle and put 1000 ml on the top 2 liter Then once you have
created your control rocket. You can change the amount of water on the bottom each time, 500, 1000,
and 1500.Then shoot it off and measure how far it goes in the open field.
C. Write a conclusion.
1. Does your data support your hypothesis? Why or why not? (Describe by referring to your
data! Be sure you talk about your data and graph.) Our hypothesis was “If the bottom has
less water in it then it will go higher because the weight of the amount of water will bring
it down.” Our hypothesis was semi-correct. There had to be a certain amount of water to
make it go the farthest, not to much, but not to little.
2. What changes would you make if you did the experiment again and why? (Be specific to the
individual experiment…NOT “Be more accurate” “Do more trials”) I would have done more
trials of the amounts of water in the bottom so that I could fine a better exact mL amount
that would make it go the farthest, I would have also made sure that my water was
completely perfectly the amount it should be.
