Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Programmes

SKE Programmes help you gain the subject knowledge you need to train to teach Maths,
Physics, Computing, Chemistry, Languages or DT. NCTLs latest data shows that almost a
third of applicants in these subjects need some form of SKE.

Subject knowledge enhancement (SKE)

The Department of Education, within the School of Education and Social Work, offers free
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses to anyone with a conditional place on an
Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course.
SKE courses are intended to boost teacher trainees' subject knowledge prior to ITE to enable
successful progression to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). They are particularly useful for
those whose academic background omits aspects of their SKE specialist subject at a level
necessary for teaching it in secondary schools. The courses will also appeal to candidates
about to embark on a Secondary PGCE science ITE course, or a middle years/Secondary
mathematics ITE course.
SKE courses are funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and are free to
participants.
These popular courses are available to study in a number of subjects, in a number of ways for
various durations:

Distance Learning (DL) in Physics or Chemistry: 3 months * supported by

VIDLearnTM

Distance Learning (DL) in Mathematics: 8 weeks * supported by VIDLearnTM

SKE in Mathematics: short or medium-length

SKE in French or Spanish (MFL): 8 weeks

SKE in Physics Taught Taught (SKEPT): 6 months (part-taught) * supported by

VIDLearnTM

Long SKE in Physics or Chemistry (LSKE): 6 months * supported by VIDLearnTM

For practising teachers, we also offer a post-ITE SKE course in Physics or Chemistry:

SKEIT in Physics or Chemistry: 4 months * supported by VIDLearnTM

All SKE courses utilise the bespoke distance learning platform VIDLearnTM

These subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses are for graduates who want to
train as secondary school teachers, but who must first develop their subject knowledge
further. You must be referred onto a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course by your
PGCE or School Direct provider.
We currently offer the following subject knowledge enhancement courses:
Computer Science - an 8 week course running 14 June to 22 August 2014 for those with an A level (or
equivalent) and some further study/experience related to Computing/ICT but who need to enhance their subject
knowledge before starting a secondary Computing/ICT or Computer Science ITT programme.
Design Technology - an 8 week course running 14 June to 22 August 2014 for those with an A level (or
equivalent) and some further study/experience related to D&T (resistant materials/systems and control - including
CAD/CAM) but who need to enhance their subject knowledge before training to become a Secondary D&T
teacher.

Mathematics (8 weeks) - running 14 June to 22 August 2014 for those with an A level (or equivalent) and some
further study/experience related to the subject but who need to enhance their subject knowledge before training
to teach Secondary mathematics.
Mathematics (36 weeks) - running 28 July 2014 to 8 June 2015 for graduates from non-mathematics disciplines
to train to teach mathematics in a secondary school. Applicants should be keenly interested in mathematics,
however: this is more important than the level of any existing qualification in the subject.
