The mother of this infant wants to know whether his/her development is normal
Your task:
In the next 9 minutes,
Upon completion of the tasks above, you will be asked TWO (2) questions by the examiner.

Observe the student performing the examination on the child and listen to his/her presentation.
Give the appropriate marks to the student.
Allocate six (6) minutes for the student to complete this exercise. Do not interrupt or prompt the student
during this examination and presentation. If the student has finished performing the examination and
presentation before the allocated 6 minutes, wait for the 6 minutes time limit before asking questions.
4. When the student has finished examining the patient and presenting the findings, proceed to questions:
Q1: What developmental milestones has this infant achieved in 1. gross motor, 2. vision and
fine motor, 3. hearing and speech, 4. psychosocial?
Q2: The child is x months old (age of child), what do you tell the mother about his/her
development?
5. If the student has not completed the physical examination by 6 minutes, the examiner may interrupt the
student and ask the student to start his/her presentation.
6. The examiner may then proceed with the questions.

Assess the psychosocial milestones (5 marks)
Smile and interact with infant and watch responsiveness. (include wave
bye-bye/ clap hands/ plays peek-a-boo in infant >6 months old)
Conduct distraction hearing test, at ear level, above and below ear level,
and at midline (>6 months) / observe whether infant responds to sound
e.g. turns eyes towards a sound source /change in activity (<6 months)
Observe if infant coos, squeals, babbles, hears and understands
Assess the vision and fine motor (5 marks)
Offer object to infant to see whether infant reaches and grasp object
If infant does not reach for object, place object in infants palm and see
whether he holds it/if infant reaches and grasp object see whether infant
can transfer object from one hand to another
Move object from side to side 180 degree and see whether infant follows
with eyes (<6 months)/ In infant who can transfer object, use small object
to test for presence of mature pincer grip (>6 months)
Assess the gross motor (5 marks)
