Practical Activity 1) Series Circuit. A) One Bulb

This document provides instructions for students to build simple series and parallel circuits with light bulbs and a 6V power source. For the series circuit, students are asked to draw a circuit with one bulb and then two bulbs, measuring current across each bulb and deriving a rule that the same current passes through all components connected in series. For the parallel circuit, students build a circuit with two branches containing one bulb each, measuring current at the source and in the branches to determine a rule about current splitting across parallel paths.

1) Series circuit.
a) One bulb.
Build a simple series circuit with one bulb, and set the power source
to 6V.
Draw your circuit in your books.
Measure the current on either side of the bulb and record your
results.
Two bulbs.
Build a simple series circuit with two bulbs. Keep the power source
set at 6V.
Draw your circuit in your books.
Measure the current on either side of the bulbs and record your
results.
Based on the results you collected, state a rule about current in a
series circuit.
2) Parallel circuit.
Build a simple parallel circuit, with one bulb in each branch. Keep the
power source set at 6V.
Measure the current as it leaves the power source and as it returns,
and measure it in the branches. Record your results.
Based on the results you collected, state a rule about current in
parallel circuits.
