Lesson Plan: Expository Writing I. Description of The Class

The lesson plan is for a 12 student English class and focuses on teaching expository writing. The teacher will use a PowerPoint presentation to explain the different types of writing and give examples of each. Students will then independently write a short expository paragraph on a "how-to" topic of their choice. Modifications are provided for different students, including allowing more time and choice of topic for gifted students, and clarifying instructions for ELL students. Students will be assessed based on their participation, attention during the lesson, and completion of the assigned paragraph.

Grouping Structure

During the PowerPoint Presentation, several students will be asked to participate and
answer a short question out loud. The whole class are attentive listeners throughout
the lesson. This makes use of independent practice, where students will be asked to
complete a short assignment on their own and then share it with the class when
finished.
VII. Modifications
Learning disabled- Before starting the PowerPoint presentation, ask the
learning disabled student to move up towards the front of the class, where the
presentation will be shown, so they have a better view and can also hear the
teacher clearly. When the assignment is given, ask the student which of the
options they think is easier for them to do.
ELLs- When the assignment is given, ask the ELL students if they understand
how they should do the assignment, and help if necessary.
Gifted- Perhaps the options given to students may seem too simple to the
gifted student. Ask the student if they are and if so, ask them to write about a
task more difficult to complete. Perhaps they have done something that was
hard enough to build or to make.
VIII. Assessment
Students will be assessed based on their participation throughout the class. Whether
the student is paying attention, the teacher will make note of, and whether the student
remains silent without any distractions. Grading will be based on rubric.
