Sustainable Voorhees
taking inventory
of townships creative
assets with survey
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Sustainable Voorhees is running a survey on arts and culture,
and the group needs help from
members of the public.
Sustainable Voorhees is asking
all those who live, work or play in
Voorhees to go online and fill out
a quick survey related to the
townships creative assets.
After some brief questions to
determine how long participants
lived or worked in Voorhees,
theyll be asked to provide keywords they best believe describe
the community. Then participants can list the special places,
activities or people they believe
make Voorhees distinct, such as
the Voorhees Town Center.

Planning board advises

Main Street complex
in need of redevelopment
Final determination of the areas redevelopment
status will now go to township committee
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
At least part of the nearly 30year-old, multi-million dollar
Main Street Complex nestled between Centennial Boulevard and
Kresson Road is recommended
for redevelopment, the Voorhees
Township Planning Board said.
The board made that recommendation at its June 22 meeting
where it reviewed a redevelopment study of the sprawling complex. The study was originally
commissioned by Township Committee in December at the request
of Brandywine Realty Trust, the
primary property owner at the
complex.
Specifically, the only building
the planning board recommended
to be declared in need of redevelopment was the completely vacant Plaza 1000 office building.
No residential housing, such as
the condos on the upper floors of

k d d H f ill

the Promenade or Piazza structures, or the nearby Terrace

Grand housing development, was
determined to be in need of redevelopment.
The study also did not include
any analysis of The Mansion at
Main Street banquet hall and
Congregation Beth El synagogue.
Planner James Clarkin was
tasked with conducting the study
on behalf of the planning board
through on-site inspections at the
complex and analysis of current
land uses, permitted uses, current occupancy of structures and
the physical condition of the
buildings onsite.
Through that analysis, Clarkin
determined the Plaza 1000 building was the only structure that
met enough of the criteria as outlined by state law to be declared
in need of redevelopment.
The Plaza 1000 building stands

Fake parking
tickets placed
on vehicles
The Voorhees Police Department has been made aware that
an unknown person is placing
fraudulent parking tickets on vehicles in the parking lots of the
Club at Main Street.
The tickets, which claim to be
from the Voorhees Police Department, claim that vehicles are illegally parked and must pay a violation fee.
The tickets have spaces where
the vehicles make and model, license plate number, and date and
time of offense have been written
in by hand.
Police say management at the
Club is aware of the situation and
is not involved in placing the fake
tickets.
If residents see someone suspicious in the area, police ask that
they call the department immediately.
Police say persons who are
falsely representing themselves
as police officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Mathew Costa, a junior mathematics/physics
major
from
Voorhees, was named to Albright
College's dean's list for the spring
semester.
Albright students had to attain
at least a 3.75 term grade point average to be named to the list.
Seton Hall University is
pleased to announce that the following Voorhees students qualified for the spring dean's list:
Madhavi Desai, Henry Laigaie and
Vincent Santore.

in our opinion

Happy Fourth of July

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at The Sun to all of
our loyal readers, we wish you
the happiest and healthiest
Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2016

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in some parts of Europe, where the
constant threat of terrorism seems to
be greater than it is here.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
227 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in countless places around the
world.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news show: life could be much worse.

Voorhees boasts best recycling program in county

In Voorhees, we are proud of our recycling efforts and can boast the best recycling program in Camden County and one
of the best recycling programs in the state.
In 2015, our community recycled 60.4 percent of all of our municipal waste, which
represents a 5.6 percent increase from 2013.
Beside the benefits to our environment realized by recycling, keeping this material
out of the trash stream saved Voorhees
$134,859 in disposal fees.
Last year, the township converted our recycling collection to the automated/side
arm system, making recycling efforts easier
for our residents. In addition, several years
ago we adopted a single-stream recycling
system where paper, cardboard, bottles,
cans and plastics are placed together in the
township-supplied recycling container. We
recycle plastic containers with numbers
1, 2, 4, 5 and 7. Look for those
numbers inside the triangular recycling
logo. Together, these changes have helped
save our environment and our tax dollars.

Please remember
disposal of televisions and all personal portable computers, including
laptop and notebook computers as
well as computer
monitors, is banned
by state law. Camden County will collect
electronic
waste four times in
2016. The next collection date is Oct. 1

with the survey, as participants
will also be asked to identify cultural and historical hallmarks of
the community and which cultural or historic assets they are most
proud of.
Participants can also help identify any documents, books or artifacts they are aware of that relate
to the history of Voorhees.
For culture, participants can
list any languages they are aware
of being spoken in Voorhees, as
well as any cultural and heritage
celebrations that occur in the

to identify any cultural challenges they feel Voorhees faces.
Those who participate in the
survey will be asked to list the
arts-related groups that exist in
town, in addition to school-based
creative and cultural opportunities and community centers or
businesses that provide creative
and cultural activities.
Participants can also list any
creative activities that dont exist
in Voorhees they would like to see
in the future, as well as what people or organizations they believe
would best be fit to lead those activities.
The survey comes as another
aspect of the townships Sustainable Voorhees organization and
its participation in Sustainable
Jersey, the nonprofit organization
that provides municipalities with
financial incentives, as well as

tools and training for those municipalities to pursue programs

that promote sustainability.
Townships can achieve different certifications through the program and rewards by implementing certain sustainable actions
such as the creative assets inventory Sustainable Voorhees is
working on now.
To participate in the survey, interested parties can find a link on
the Voorhees Township website,
as well as Sustainable Voorhees
Facebook page.
Names are not required to participate in the survey, but those

Fourth of July concert

and fireworks
By Freeholder Deputy Director Edward McDonnell
I would like to wish
everyone a happy Independence
Day
weekend. The Freeholder Board will
host the annual Camden Waterfront Freedom Festival and
Fourth of July fireworks display on
Monday, July 4, 2016.
The festival is set to run from 5:00 to
10:00 p.m. and will include free concerts and a tribute to our nations Veterans, and will conclude with a
spectacular, world-class fireworks
display over the Delaware River.
The Camden Waterfront Freedom
Festival will feature a variety of fun
activities for the entire family to
enjoy together. For children, there
will be face painting, balloon
twisters, jugglers, games and much
more. For adults, the festival will feature the South Jersey Beer and Wine
Garden with local brewers, vineyards and distilleries such as Flying
Fish, Sharrott Winery and Cooper
River Distillers. There will also be
food and beverages available to
please everyone.
The Independence Day festivities
begin with a musical salute to America and our Veterans with a performance by the Tri-County Symphonic
Band at 5 p.m. The music continues
at 6:30 p.m. with Ginger Coyle and the
Peace Freqs. Taking the stage at 8
p.m. is five-time Grammy winner
Michael McDonald known for his
work with the Doobie Brothers,
Steely Dan and his own solo career.
At 9:30 p.m. the regions largest fireworks show lights up the Delaware
River.
We expect more than 150,000 visitors to Wiggins Waterfront Park this
summer for events ranging from
great entertainment like the Fourth
of July Fireworks and 25th Anniversary Season of the Sunset Jazz Series

to special events such

as the South Jersey
Caribbean Festival
and Workout on the
Waterfront.
My colleagues on the
Freeholder Board and
I know how much residents enjoy the outdoors, and we strive to
continually improve
Camden County's parks so that they
provide maximum entertainment
and fun for the whole family.
Wiggins Waterfront Park is located
at Riverside Drive and Dr. Martin
Luther King Boulevard in Camden.
The Camden Waterfront is easily accessible by public transportation by
taking PATCO, the NJ Transit Riverline or the Riverlink Ferry from the

Planner: Internal structure is obsolete

PLANNER
Continued from page 4
six stories tall, with 170,000
square feet of area dedicated to
office space. However, at this
time, that building is 100 percent
vacant, which was a major factor
in Clarkin and the boards recommendation on the structure.
Large office spaces, such as
this building, are substandard
and obsolete in the current office
market, Clarkin said. This is
due to technology and the idea of
a 9-to-5 work day disappearing,
different hours, the idea of a
large, centralized location is becoming not needed as much.
More companies are really going
toward urban spaces if theyre
going to have a centralized location.
Clarkin also said Plaza 1000s
internal structure is obsolete to
meet modern-day, marketable office standards, and would most
likely have to be demolished entirely if redevelopment of any
kind were to move forward.
According to Clarkin, while the

building has been without tenants for some time, there was
not much evidence of dilapidation only a few awnings coming
apart and some debris in certain
offices.
Clarkin said it was obsolescence and discontinuance of use
that classifies the building as in
need of redevelopment more than
anything else.
Clarkin also suggested some
parking areas at the complex be
included for redevelopment as
well, just to make redevelopment
more attractive if the process
were to move forward.
Upon the conclusion of
Clarkins presentation, the planning board listened to input from
members of the public, many of
whom sought to clarify that no
residential units were going to be
affected by the process.
With the board and its solicitor
addressing residents concerns,
the board ultimately agreed with
Clarkins report.
Solicitor Stuart Platt said the
recommendation and findings
would now go back before
Voorhees Township Committee
for a final vote on the complexs

redevelopment status.
According to Platt, areas determined to be in need of redevelopment allow governing municipal
bodies more freedom in how the
uses for those areas are zoned,
but at this time it was premature
to say what, if anything, might
someday be built.
Platt said this was only the beginning of a very long process,
and if the Voorhees Township
Committee eventually agrees
with the boards findings, the
owners of any properties who
wished to move forward with actual redevelopment would still
need to appear before the planning board and township committee many more times.
Platt also said if any other
parts of the complex were looked
at for redevelopment at a future
time, the process for those properties would have to start from the
beginning with another study
and analysis by the township.

Becica named Distinguished

Engineer of the Year
Camden County Engineer
Kevin Becica has been named
Distinguished Engineer of the
Year by the South Jersey branch
of the American Society of Civil
Engineers.
I commend the work of our
county engineer, Kevin Becica,
said Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works.
Kevin does an outstanding job of
designing, managing and developing projects that benefit all of
us in Camden County.
The ASCE award notification
said that Becica has, and continues to be, an asset to Camden
County over the last several years
as the Camden County engineer.
Becica has successfully completed procuring funds for and
overseeing the completion of nu-

merous critical infrastructure

projects to benefit the citizens of
Camden County.
Becica's work ethic is widely
recognized throughout the industry as exemplary and her contributions to the Camden County region have improved public safety,
have increased capacity for the
traveling public and provided
much-needed maintenance of deteriorating infrastructure.
I am greatly humbled and
honored to receive this ASCE
award because it represents
recognition by my peers in the regional engineering community,
Becica said.
