    I express my sincere gratitude to my research guide Dr. P. Kannan, Associate


    Professor, Department of English, Karnatak College, Dharwad, who developed my
    analytical and writing skills through his resourceful guidance. He has been a perennial
    source of inspiration for me throughout the course of my research.
    I express my gratitude to Dr. Vijaya Guttal, Chairperson, Department of Studies
    in English, Karnatak University, Dharwad for having provided me with an opportunity to
    pursue Ph.D. course in Department of Studies in English, Karnatak University, Dharwad.
    I would also like to remember all my teachers who have moulded my personality, with

    I take this opportunity to express my deep sense of gratitude to my grandfather
    Dr. N.B. Kajjari, Emeritus Scientist, Rtd. Chief Scientific Officer, Ex. Member, Board of
    Regends, UAS, Dharwad, who sowed the seeds of research in my mind, served as a role
    model and constantly inspired me in my endeavor. I also fondly remember my
    grandmother Late Smt. Veeramma N. Kajjari without whose blessings this
    accomplishment would not have been possible.
    I am highly grateful to my parents Sri. P.N. Goudnaik, Rtd. Asst. Director of

    supportive to me. They have also been taking care of my daughter for the last four and a
    half years and have relieved me of my responsibilities of a mother to a greater extent. I
    have thus been enabled to focus my attention on my research. I am also indebted to Shri
    S.H. Koujageri, Rtd. Principal and Late Smt. Kasturi S. Koujageri, Rtd. Teacher who
    have bestowed on me all their blessings and made me capable of this achievement. Mrs.

    Kasturi S. Koujageri, the embodiment of love and dedication is no more in this earthly
    world but I believe that her blessings are always with me.
    I am also extremely thankful to my parents-in-law Shri. B.R. Gorawar, Rtd.
    Teacher and Smt. Parvatevva Gorawar for their constant support and unflinching belief in
    me. I wholeheartedly thank all my family members- all my uncles and aunts, my
    brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nephew and nieces. My special thanks to my
    sisters Dr. Sudha Koujageri, Mrs. Geeta Ravikumar and Mrs. Padma Suresh Meti for
    their ceaseless encouragement.
    I am indebted to my husband Shri. Mahesh B. Gorawar, who has stood by me in
    every step and been a strong driving force in this important achievement. I ought to thank
    my lovely seven year-old daughter Aditi, without whose endurance, great sense of
    understanding and support, I would not have been able to undertake this task.
    My heart-felt thanks are also due, to Dr. B.P. Donur, Prof. R. Narasimhan, Dr.
    S.V. Kotabagi, who have supported me. The timely help of Dr. Arvind Nawale, Dr. N.
