Day 3 Practical Examples

This document provides information about a summer course on casing design taught by Rahman Ashena and Michael Prohaska at the University of Leoben. It includes an example of casing strings used, API terminology related to casing design, and two homework problems involving the design of intermediate and production casing strings. The document outlines design considerations such as burst and collapse pressures, safety factors, mud weights, and cement slurry weights that must be addressed when designing casing strings.

Select the cheapest 7-in intermediate casing (assume price
increases with weight, then with grade as listed in API
tables).
Note: Use pore pressure gradient curves, minimum pore
pressure kick margin to calculate mud weight required to drill
each drilling section.

Homework I
A) Redo the example for designing the production and
intermediate casing considering the following:
Worst case scenario for burst.
Collapse S.F.=1.3
Tension S.F.=1.6
B) Design the 9 5/8-in surface casing. Cement slurry
weight to cement behind the casing is 9.5 ppg.

Homework II

It is required to design a 9 5/8-in intermediate casing

with setting depth of 5000 ft. Use a worst case scenario
for collapse and burst. Consider bouyancy in tension
criterion.
Make an attempt to select the cheapest with lowest
grade casing. All design or safety factors should be
