E-Nursing represents an innovative approach to nursing
education that has the potential to support professional
practice throughout the institution. This INTRODUCTION Todays world is highly sophisticated by means of recent technologies such as Information technology (IT), software developments, bio technology, nanotechnology and research pertaining to these fields so on. Nursing also develops in a tremendous way and these technologies influence nursing in a considerable manner. Health professionals will have to develop the skills to use these technologies in their clinical practices. IT skills being needed is becoming a universal truth for nurses working in many countries. The technology of E-learning in nursing commencing with face to face teaching, in the class room using power point and websites to aid interactive learning. One of the challenges nursing education now faces is to deliver alternative ways to deliver the programs which will reduce class contact time without reducing the quality of the program. The key challenge that lecturers confront include alteration to their workloads, coping with new technologies, online course management, online students support and the development of skill to function effectively. E-learning stands for Electronic Learning. It is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication. E-learning commonly referred to the intentional use of networked information and communication technology in teaching and learning. A number of other terms are also used to describe this mode of teaching and learning. These include online learning, virtual learning, distributed learning, network and web-based learning. TYPES/ MODALITIES OF E-LEARNING:
Individualized self-paced learning online:
It refers to situations where an individual learner is accessing learning resources such as a database or course content online via an Intranet or the Internet. A typical example of this is a learner studying alone or conducting some research on the Internet or a local network. Individualized self-paced learning offline: It refers to situations where an individual learner is using learning resources such as a database or a computerassisted learning package offline (ie; while not connected to an Intranet or Internet). An example of this is a learner working alone off a hard drive, a CD or DVD. Group-based e-learning synchronously: It refers to situations where groups of learners are working together in real time via an Intranet or the Internet. It may include text-based conferencing, and one or two-way audio and videoconferencing. Examples of this include learners engaged in a real-time chat or an audio-videoconference. Group-based e-learning asynchronously: It refers to situations where groups of learners are working over an Intranet or the Internet where exchanges among participants occur with a time delay (ie; not in real time). Typical examples of this kind of activity include on-line discussions via electronic mailing lists and text-based conferencing within learning managements systems. ADVANTAGES OF E-LEARNING
It is less expensive to support.
It is less expensive to produce. It is not constrained by geographic consideration. It is more flexible in terms of time. It can be delivered virtually anywhere. The number of students is never limited by the size of the classroom. It can work from any location and any time. The teacher is able to monitor student progress. The individual learning is able to monitor student progress.
IMPORTANCE OF E-LEARNING IN NURSING
Enable learning at anytime and anywhere unencumbered by time and place. The observation of demonstration with use of animation and narration with music is most direct message to the students, it is very effective method of learning. Ensuring that professional staffs have access to up to date information on which to base their practice. Speeding up, and easing, access to service for patients. Improving communication flows of essential patients information. Ensuring that patients and carers are informed about thy National Health Services and best practice in relation to their condition. The students can improve psychomotor skills by using a virtual environment with the use of stimulations, the psychomotor experience could be practiced and reviewed again and again. For lecture it improves students learning, good interactive, and involvement of students for the best learning. Teachings with the use of movement pictures are very effective to deliver information and it never forgets by the students. It demonstrates procedures along with environment ie; clinical set up will activate several senses and involvement of student that increases learning. It provides an opportunity for observational learning. It clarifies each scientific principle by appropriate illustrations. Repetition is possible and easy to use when the students want to see again the class/procedures and it registered in the students mind. It correlated theory with practical. POPULAR E-LERANING TECHNOLOGIES Voice-based technology such as CD or MP3 recordings or web casts.
Video technology, such as instructional videos, DVDs and
interactive video conferencing. Computer-based technology delivered over the Internet or Corporate Intranet. Studies indicate that distance learning can be effective as the traditional format when the methods are appropriate to the teaching tasks. There is student-teacher interaction, and the teachers provide students with appropriate and timely feedback. PREPARATION OF E-CONTENT WRITING E-LEARNING CONTENT Rules for good writing: Understand the audience and address them correctly. A good way is t write in the second person. Use simple or compound sentence structures. Avoid clauses and oppositives Use common contractions. Do not use pronouns where they could lead to confusion. Avoid using multiple adjectives before a noun Follow one writing style. Keep the fonts simple. Extra characters: Avoid using unnecessary characters. Never use a dash where a comma will suffice. Never use two dashes where one dash will suffice. Avoid using more parentheses and brackets than necessary.
Avoid using exclamation marks. Having used an exclamation
mark once, need to use it again to make the next idea sound less important. (lot of exclamation marks make a negative impression on the learner). Use the bolt and italic fonts sparingly. Be careful using words in UPPERCASE. They do draw attention, but at the same time make the reader miss out the lowercase words. Tables: Use tables only where there is an absolute necessary. It can add to the complexity of the Web page. Make sure that a paragraph contains only one idea. Hyperlinks: Take advantages of using hyperlink where they would be helpful. For example, where the student is to go back to one of the previous sections. Graphics: Make use of pictures to effectively deliver the messages. A picture is worth ten thousand words. Always include a written description of any image that is given in the content. Headlines: Make the heading signal the main idea of the following abstract. List directions using numerals or bullets with only one direction per numeral or bullet. Animation: Use animation to illustrate examples. Animation is more powerful than still images.
Animation takes up more of the disk space and may require
additional hard and/or software. Eg; use in demonstration of procedures such as ear irrigation, wound dressing etc. Audio: Use narration if possible. It is the most direct message to the student and often very effective. Supplement the learning material with music and sound effects to define the mood of the presentation, enhance the emotion and illustrate points. Interaction: According to research, people remember 70% of what they interact with. Some common types of interactive multimedia applications are the following:
A test is usually introduced to estimate the students skills, to see how well he or she has worked with the learning material. Types of tests: Multiple choices: This test is a question with several possible answers. The student is to select the correct answer. True/False: This test includes a statement that the student must accept or deny. Essay: In this test, the student is expected to provide the answer in the form of an essay. Matching: In this test, the student is to find matches for the given statements.
Ordering: In this test, the student is to order the given
statements. Fill in the blank: The student is to provide the missing part of the given statement. Multiple answers: This test is a question with several possible answers. The student is to select the correct answers Drag & Drop: In this test, the student is to order the given images. CONCLUSION: Our objective is to strengthen e-learning not only regionally but also globally. This strategy identifies development of skills such as communication, information technology and learning. These skills should be developed throughout an individuals life, and have now been integrated into curriculum from primary school through to higher education institutions. With advances in communication technology and proliferation of distancelearning medium such as CD-ROM, video-conferencing, computer aided instructions, internet as well as traditional paper based courses. Students have opportunity to select the educational approach that suits best their learning styles.
