Safer streets
Commissioners unanimously approve
ordinance on first reading concerning
game equipment and objects left in streets

had quite an exciting two days

last week.
Last Sunday, Baxter was
named an Eagle Scout during
his Court of Honor ceremony.
The next day, Baxter was recognized again during a ceremo-

ny. This time, he was honored

for being one of 20 high school
students from across the country named a finalist for the 2016

The borough is working to

make sure kids can still have fun
playing on their neighborhood
streets, but in a safer way.
Haddonfield
commissioners
unanimously approved an ordinance on first reading at their
meeting on Tuesday, May 10 about
game equipment and other objects being prohibited in the
streets. The commissioners wanted to be clear the ordinance is not
banning play in the streets, but
objects of play being left in the
streets.
We want the kids to be outside
playing, but we want to do it safely, Commissioner Neal Rochford
said.
This ordinance amending the
borough code came about because of people leaving items
such as sports nets and trashcans
in the street. According to
Rochford, this is a safety concern
for cars, sweepers and snowplows.
It has come to our attention
that people are putting out basketball courts on the road. We are
OK playing with them on the

road, as long as the base remains

on the park strip. What has been
happening is that people are putting the base out in the street, and
we are concerned about cars,
sweepers
and
snowplows,
Rochford said.
According to the ordinance:
A basketball pole, basket and
backboard assembly, whether stationary or moveable, is prohibited at any time from being placed
in a public street or public thoroughfare utilized by motor vehicles.
Game equipment, such as
hockey goals or soccer goals, utilized to play games in the public
street or public thoroughfare
must be removed after the game
has ended, and in no event may
this type of equipment remain in
a public street or public thoroughfare overnight.

materials, demolition materials,
tools, equipment, non-registered
vehicles, landscape materials,
toys, shrubs, branches, vegetation

Haddonfield residents and

businesses can tee off to help
local teachers next month.
The Haddonfield Educational
Trust is once again hosting one of
its major fundraisers of the year
with the annual golf tournament
and family barbecue fundraiser.
The event will take place on June
20 with registration beginning at
11 a.m., a shotgun start at noon
and a family barbecue at 5 p.m. at
Tavistock Country Club. Proceeds
will help raise money for teacher
grants in Haddonfield Public
Schools.
This event is for the Haddonfield community. Everything goes
toward the teacher grants. Our
goal is to keep providing for the
teachers, but this is also a great
way to celebrate the Haddonfield
community and Haddonfield
school district, Sarah Tambussi,

president of the HET Board of

Trustees, said.
The HET is a non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting
the educational quality of HPS
and its students through supplemental fundraising from public
donors, corporate partnerships,
grant opportunities, scholarships
and community outreach.
It has raised money for various
projects in the past with items
such as student scholarships, the
Central Elementary School playground and the turf field.
Last year, the HET decided to
start something new with its golf
tournament. Raising $15,000 last
year, the money was distributed
to HPS teachers through HETs
Innovative Teacher Grant Program. Grants contributed to programs at the elementary, middle
and high school levels and included projects ranging from civics to
foreign language, and from
Shakespeare to STEAM.

Board of Trustees voted to continue the program this year, and
proceeds raised from the 2016
Golf Tournament and Family
Barbecue will once again support
teacher grants.
The grant program supports
innovative programming that
would not be otherwise funded
through the districts regular operating budget, Tambussi said.
For the golf tournament, businesses sponsor golfers, community members form a group or individuals can sign up to play golf at
Tavistock Country Club. Each
ticket includes golf, a golf cart, a
boxed lunch, barbecue dinner,
shirt and prizes. Prices for golfing

After golfing, a family barbecue will be held at the club where
there will be food, awards, prizes
and fun. Tickets to attend only the
barbecue are $40 per adult, $12
per child and $100 for two adults
and up to five children.
According to Tambussi, the
golf tournament and family barbecue is a great way to enjoy the
day and spend time with people in
the community, while helping a
good cause.
Its a great day and an amazing country club. Lots of teachers
and administrators come, families have a good time, we give out
prizes to best golfers and it all
ends with a good positive note for
students. We hold the tournament
to bring everyone together at the
end, Tambussi said.
She hopes those who come become closer to the schools and
learn more about HET.

Its an exciting time in the life of a
young man or young woman. The final
weeks of high school, the graduation
ceremony, the hugs and congratulations following, the celebrations that
will last throughout the summer and
the packing for, the drive to and the arrival at college are memories graduates will remember fondly.

came with a lot of restrictions on your
freedom, but it also gave you a get-outof-jail-free card, or cards. Once graduation is over, that label goes away. All
freedoms given to an American adult

But so, too, will all the consequences
of your actions. The decisions you
make from as serious as do I study
for this test? to should I eat another
burrito? will all have results that
will affect your life. Its a lot of responsibility. Its a good thing, for sure, but
it can also be a scary thing, becoming
an adult.
So, while you still have the option,
live life as a kid one last time. Savor
these last days of high school. And be
confident that you will do just fine.

HMHS alumnus gives Rowan commencement speech

Jeffrey Eker Jr. graduated from Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering at Rowan University on May 13

Jeffrey Eker Jr. began his lifes journey
in the small borough of Haddonfield. He
graduated from Haddonfield Memorial
High School in 2012 and went to Rowan
University. Though starting off small, he
has grown since going away to college. His
ambition has led him around the world,
made him a founder of a new app and allowed him to be selected the commencement speaker for his graduating class.
Eker graduated from the Henry M.
Rowan College of Engineering in the Hon-

Rowan University on
May 13 as an electrical
and computer engineer
with a minor in German studies. He was
honored and excited to
be selected by the university to represent his
peers as the student

er.
According to his mother Kathaleen,
Eker has always been interested in engineering, since his dad is a mechanical engi-

neer. Ever since he was young, hed say, I

can fix that.
Both Eker and his mom credit the
Odyssey of the Mind competitions as one
of the real jumping off points for him. He
and his team went to the world finals for
six consecutive years. Eker also said an apprenticeship at the Naval Surface Warfare
Center solidified his like for engineering,
but specifically electrical and computer engineering.
In high school, I applied for an internship, but the Naval Center rejected me. I

The post will conduct its Annual Memorial Day Parade stepping
off promptly at 10 a.m. The parade will form up with its forward position at Kings Highway
and Chestnut Street facing toward Haddonfield Memorial High
School. The parade will end at the
high school where a memorial
service will be conducted.
After the parade, a memorial
service will be held at the War
Memorial in front of the High
School. The memorial service
will honor the fallen men and
women of nine wars, from the
American Revolution to the present-day conflict in Afghanistan.

Clean water a priority at

the CCMUA

We have all heard
about the water
crisis in Flint
Michigan that endangered 100,000
people, including
9,000 children. In
addition to excessively high levels
of lead in the
drinking
water
that
occurred
when the city switched from Detroit
water to Flint River water without
adequate controls in place, the city
also experienced elevated levels of
Legionella bacteria that led to 87
cases of Legionellosis and 10 deaths.
Like Flint, Camden City has ageing infrastructure. But unlike Flint,
we have the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority (CCMUA)
that has made clean water a priority,
and are dedicated stewards of the
environment.
Last month, officials from the
CCMUA were invited to speak at the
Water and Wastewater Equipment
Manufacturers
Association
(WWEMA) annual form in Washington, D.C. on the accomplishments
they have made in Camden City.
The CCMUA has placed great importance on optimizing water quality, minimizing odors and achieving
cost efficiencies to reduce rates.
They did this while reducing their
carbon footprint and implementing
green energy initiatives and installing green infrastructure.
Through collaborations with the
state, city and neighborhood organizations, the CCMUA addressed
flooding problems, remediated contaminated sites, reduced air emissions, expanded recycling and
provided environmental education.
The CCMUA's projects in Camden
City included the construction of
Phoenix Park, a 5.3 acre site in the
Waterfront South neighborhood.
Not only was this an important step
toward improving the quality of life
in the Waterfront South community,
it also captured storm water runoff

and prevented it from

entering
Camdens
combined sewer system. The park transformed an area which
was inaccessible to the
community through
prior industrialization
by reconnecting residents back to one of
the regions greatest
assets, the Delaware
River.
To alleviate flooding in Cramer
Hill, the CCMUA made improvements to separate the storm and
sanitary pipe infrastructure in and
around Von Nieda Park. This project also included the Baldwins Run
Daylighting Project, which restored
16,718 square feet of the historic
Baldwins Run tributary to help
channel storm water from Von
Nieda Park out to the back channel
of the Delaware River.
The CCMUA has also overseen the
construction of rain gardens
throughout Camden City to reduce
storm water from entering Camden's overburdened sewer system
and reduce flooding. As an added
bonus, the landscaping in the rain
gardens - the grading and plants selected - have not only worked to capture storm water, they have
contributed to the beautification of
Camden in the process.
The thousands of trees and plants
installed in the gardens capture and
infiltrate millions of gallons of
storm water each year that would
otherwise contributed to overflow
the combined sewer system into
Camdens streets, parks, homes and
waterways.

Haddonfield Crew Club wins state

championship, qualifies for nationals
The Haddonfield Crew Club
rowed to great success at the City
Championship Regatta on the
Schuylkill River on May 1. More
than 71 crew clubs comprising 545
boats competed at this annual
event, and Haddonfield took top
honors with a third place finish
in the Boys Varsity 4+ category
(represented by Luke Small, Max
Levin, Lachlan Mersky, Blaze Gianguilio and coxswain Owen
Hart) and two fifth place finishes
by the Varsity Girls 8+ boat and
the Varsity Girls 2nd 8+ boat.
With these impressive finishes,
all three of these boats also qualified to go to SRAA National
Championships in Ohio at the
end of May.
The City Championships Regatta also served as the New Jersey State Championships for 2016
because the Garden State Regatta
was cancelled this year due to the

closure of the Cooper River for

the dredging project. The Boys
Varsity 4+ boat's impressive results placed it as the fastest boat
in New Jersey, and crowned it
New Jersey State Champions.
They received the traditional fire
truck ride on Wednesday night,
May 4 through downtown Haddonfield.
In a similar fashion, the Varsity Girls 8+ boat took an impressive third place for the New Jersey State Championships in its
category. The boat consisted of
Elena Kommedal, Abby Bentley,
Carolyne Bollentino, Christie
Castorino, Annelise Rowling,
Kate Donohue, Kiernan Loue,
Mia Ippolito, and coxswain
Emma Tranfalia.
Additionally, the Varsity Girls
second 8+ boat took second place
in its category for the New Jersey
State Championships. The boat

consisted of Kathleen Hohweiler,

Shannon Murphy, Maggie Clapp,
Carlee Riordan, Regan McDonnell, Hannah Roche, Elizabeth
Knox, Gabrielle Owens, and
coxswain Abigail Griffith.

Police Chief Ted Stuessy said
this ordinance is consistent with
other communities ordinances.
Rochford wanted it to be very
clear that play is not prohibited; it
is just the objects being left in the
streets.
We really dont want anything

left in the street, so we are prohibiting any type of items; but

still, at the same time, allow the
kids to play in the street. They
can do that, but they have to remove the equipment immediately.
We are just trying to make it safer
for everyone, Rochford said.
The public hearing and second
reading of this ordinance will be
at the next commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:30
p.m. in Borough Hall.

budget on second reading. The

budget is $381,350. Last years was
$372,300. This increase would be
funded by budgeting of the higher Craft & Fine Arts Festival results seen in 2015 at $49,000 and a
carryover of unspent marketing

The annual Haddonfield fireworks display for the boroughs
Independence Day Celebration
was approved by commissioners.
A permit was granted to the Haddonfield Celebrations Association
for the display to be set on July 3
with a rain date of July 9.
The borough will be auctioning its 1990 Fire Pump Apparatus

Eker has traveled around the world

love for engineering, and they
gave me a higher position as an
apprentice, Eker said.
Since then, Eker has used his
ambition to accomplish a lot in
his four years at Rowan. He completed five internships at the
Naval Surface Warfare Center, L-3
Communications, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and
Rockwell Automation. He is an
active member of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is the Region 2 student
representative.

Eker has also traveled around

the world. In May, he helped raise
$30,000 for 10 students to travel for
the Australia/American IEEE
Exchange program, which he
founded with an Australian student he met while studying in
Germany. He traveled to Sri
Lanka to attend an IEEE congress, speaking about his experiences as the Region 2 representative. Eker, in conjunction with
Rockwell Automation, also created a presentation on the life sciences industry he gave in Singapore. Eker then spoke at a TEDx
event at Telkom University about
the power of international perspective in Indonesia.
In spring 2015, Eker founded
Tediferous, LLC, to create a

smart-travel mobile app called

CultureCloud that connects locals
with travelers who share mutual
interests. He sought and was
granted approval to incorporate
CultureCloud into the Junior/Senior Engineering Clinic program
in the Henry M. Rowan College of
Engineering. The team is now 15
members strong.
CultureCloud came from a
need Eker recognized in his foreign travels to connect users
based on their interests. According to a CultureCloud press release, modern travelers are looking for adventures and human experiences while traveling the
world, and the best way to do that

When he was selected to do the
commencement speech, Eker said
he was in shock and felt honored
to be the speaker.
I honestly couldnt believe it. I
felt like I was doing what I should
be doing I feel super privileged
to have this opportunity, Eker
said.
Eker wanted to focus his
speech on the past of Rowan University, as well as the future of the
students graduating.

In July 1992, Henry Rowan and

his wife donated $100 million to
the institution; the Rowans only
request was that a College of Engineering be created. For their
generosity, the school changed its
name to include the Rowan name.
Last year, the commencement
speaker was able to turn and
thank Rowan personally for helping to bring the colleges engineering program to what it is
today. Unfortunately, Rowan
passed away on Dec. 9, 2015.
Eker said his speech thanked
Rowan, but also focused on the future.
For my speech, I wanted to
focus around maintaining his vision. We were able to meet and
talk to him; moving forward we
wont be able to see him. Its our
responsibility to continue and
spread what weve learned, Eker
said.

According to Kathaleen, Eker

will be graduating with no debt.
His freshman year, he did have to
take out a student loan, but since
then he has applied to and won
scholarships to cover his tuition.
As
a
graduation
present,
Kathaleen said the family is paying off his freshman year loan.
Its astounding, everything
that he has accomplished. You
just want something more than
what you had for your children,
and he has far surpassed anything we could have imagined for
him, Kathaleen said.
Eker has accepted a full-time
position as a business technology
analyst at Deloitte Consulting,
LLP. He will begin working in
September, but before then he
will be traveling around the world
to make new connections and to
offer international perspective
through CultureCloud.

Baxter excels in community service, too

Football Hall of Famer Jack
Youngblood presented Baxter
with a plaque during a special
ceremony last Monday in the
high schools library.
Baxter found out he was going
to be a finalist in March after applying for the award earlier in the
school year. He remembers the
moment being one of the most
amazing of his life.
It was just a yell, a shout,
everything, Baxter said. At
first, I couldnt even believe it
honestly. Its such a great honor.
This is the fourth year the U.S.
Army and Pro Football Hall of
Fame have partnered to present
the Award of Excellence program. It is open to all sophomore,
junior and senior high school athletes in the United States and recognizes those who excel in academics, athletics and community
service.
Baxter excelled in all three
areas. On the soccer field, Baxter
was twice named to the all-Colonial Conference second team. In
2015, Baxter was one of South Jerseys top goalies with 14 shutouts
and 98 saves. He was named to the
all-Colonial Conference first team
at the end of his final season.
Baxter also played basketball at
Haddonfield.
Baxter performed well in the
classroom and is a member of the
high schools National Honor Society. Community service is also a
big part of Baxters life. He has
been a Scout for many years, and
his Scouting career culminated
with this Eagle Scout Court of
Honor last week.
The big thing for me was his
service and the honor society,
Youngblood said when talking
about Baxter. Those two things
and the academics. I like kids
who can be really good in school
and athletics.
Baxter said community service
was just as important to him as

athletics. He also felt participating in Scouting made him a more

well-rounded person.
The soccer team is entirely
different from Eagle Scout and
the crowd there, Baxter said. I
think that being able to be a part
of so many programs and being
friends with so many guys is enjoyable.
Character was a word brought
up multiple times during the ceremony. Youngblood said high

character is something both the

U.S. Army and pro football teams
preach every day. He felt Baxter
was the perfect example of someone with high character.
Because youve got character,
youre going to keep moving forward, Youngblood said to Baxter
during the ceremony.

felt Baxter was the perfect fit for

the award because of the way he
conducted himself on and off the
field.
He was a lead-by-example type
of kid, whether that was in games
or in practice, Nixon said. Jon
was always very driven, but he
was also the type of guy who didnt take days off.
Baxter and the 19 other finalists from across the country will
be honored in August in Canton,
Ohio, during the Pro Football
Hall of Fames Enshrinement
Weekend. As part of the trip, the
finalists get to attend the Hall of
Fame Enshrinement Ceremony
on Aug. 6, where the winner of
the award will be announced. The
next day, all of the finalists will
get to attend the Hall of Fame
Game between the Green Bay
Packers and Indianapolis Colts.
