Elementary Surveying Problem Set 2 q1

This document presents 8 situations involving compass surveys, traverses, bearings, areas, and geometric problems. For each situation, it lists several calculation problems regarding bearings, lengths, areas, or other geometric properties. The problems require determining values like true bearings, magnetic azimuths, lengths of lines, angles, areas, and more, based on information provided in each situation such as observed bearings, lengths of lines, angles of triangles or quadrilaterals.

PROBLEM SET 2 1Q 2015-2016 (CE 120)

Read the following problems and answer the questions, choosing the best answer among the choices provided. Shade the
letter of your choice on the answer sheet provided. Strictly no erasures. Shade letter E if your answer is not among the
choices provided.
Situation A : In a compass survey made 50 years ago, the observed magnetic bearing of a reference line AB was
S5018E when the magnetic declination was 815 east. At present, a new survey was made and the declination in the
same locality changed to 1210 west.
1. Determine the true bearing of the line fifty years ago.
2. Determine the magnetic azimuth of the line at present.
3. Determine the true azimuth of the line at present
Situation B: The observed magnetic bearings of a closed compass traverse are shown in the table :

Situation D. A lot is bounded by 3 straight sides namely, AB, N. 45 E. 160 m. long, BC and CA = 190 m. long in clockwise
direction. From point E, 100 m. from A and on side AB, a dividing line runs to D which is on side CA. The area of ADE is to
be 2/5 of the total area of the lot. The total area of the lot is 11643.88 m.
10. Determine the distance from D to A.
11. Compute the bearing of line AD.
12. Compute the distance DE.

14. Compute the DMD of the line 4 5.
15. Compute the area of the whole lot in acres
Situation F. The sides and bearing of a triangular lot are AB, N 40 E, BC, S 20 E, and CA, N 80 W. A point D is marked
on side BC such that line AD divides the triangle into two parts with the area of ABD equal to 1/3 of the whole area of 14,400
sq.m.
16. Determine the distance from D to C.
17. Determine the length of line AD.
18. Compute the bearing of line AD

PROBLEM SET 2 1Q 2015-2016 (CE 120)

Situation G: A magnetic bearing of N 3430W is recorded on an old survey plan dated Jan 15, 1910. It is desired to
reestablished this direction on the site in 1977. The 1970 chart shows a declination of 10W for the area, with an annual
change of 2 eastward. If the true bearing of a line is N 4630W, calculate the magnetic bearing on the year 1977
Situation H: Given the following data of a quadrilateral. Find the length of the line CD
< ACD = 104
<CDB = 89
< ACB = 60
<ADB =53

Line AB = 1000 m
