The Heydar Aliyev (formerly known as Maersk Explorer) is
Maersk Drillings first semi-submersible drilling rig in the
Caspian Sea. The rig is designed for year-round operation at
water depths from 45 m to 1,000 m (147 ft to 3,280 ft).

TENSIONER SYSTEM
Riser tensioners with 2 wireline. 4 x double riser tensioners
+ 2 single riser tensioners. Each 200,000 lbs .
DERRICK
12 m x 12 m x 66 m (40 ft x 40 ft x 216 ft), 2,000,000 lbs hook
load with starracking fingerboard for 360 stands of drill pipe/
drill collar.
DRILLING INSTRUMENTATION
Computerised drilling instrumentation and control system
including pc networks with data transmission in a fibre optic
bus with multiple workstations. Cyberbase Drilling Control
System.
TOP DRIVE AND PIPE HANDLING
National Oilwell PS-2 with pipe handler and block retract
system, 1,000 t capacity. Powered by two GE-752 DC motors.
Max. continuous torque 50,000 ft/lbs at 200 rpm.
National Oilwell IR-170 iron roughneck for 29 OD
tubular, 125,500 ft/lbs mounted on vertical starracker.
Pipe racking sytem, vertical starracker and V-door
standbuilder for 2 13 tubulars.
CROWN COMPENSATOR
Hydralift CMC 1000-25. 2,000,000 lbs static load. 750,000
lbs compensating load. Hydraulic locking with 25 ft stroke.
ROTARY TABLE
National Oilwell, 49 hydraulic rotary table. Max. load
2,000,000 lbs (910 t).
MUD PUMPS
Three Wirth single-acting triplex pumps, each driven by two
1,100 hp GE-752 DC motors, rated for 7,500 psi.
WELL CONTROL EQUIPMENT
Shaffer NXT 18 BOP - 15,000 psi consisting of two annular
+ one triple ram preventer. Riser and telescopic joints
installed with two 15,000 psi choke & kill lines 3116, one
5,000 psi booster line, one hydraulic conduit line.
MUD RETURN SYSTEM
4 Axrom Ax-1 Shale Shakers. Two 1,200 Vacu-Flo vacuum
degassers. Two Hiller heavyjet centrifuges and two Rigtech
cascade desilters.
POWER SUPPLY
Four Wrtsil Vasa 16V 200. Continuous output 2,680 kW,
600 volts, 60 Hz each driving one ABB AMG 710S6 diesel
generator.
CRANES
One Kenz DHL 40 diesel-hydraulic crane, 43 m (141 ft) boom,
40 t capacity to boat, 40 t capacity deck to deck. One Kenz
DHL 60 diesel-hydraulic crane, 51 m (168 ft) boom, 50t
capacity to boat, 60 t capacity deck to deck. One Knuckle
Boom crane electric-hydraulic, 25 m (82 ft) boom, 12t
capacity for transfer of tubular from main deck to raised
catwalk.
HELICOPTER DECK
15 m (50 ft) diameter helicopter deck suitable for Sikorsky
S-61L and MI-8 helicopters.
MOORING SYSTEM
Self-contained eight point mooring system for up to 500
m water depth. Provisions for prelaid wire chain mooring
system up to 1,000 m water depth. Eight traction anchor
winches BLM TW 300 for 3 wire. Eight Bruce anchors, 12t.
200t stalling power and max. 500 t brake holding power.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Lifesaving and fire fighting equipment in accordance with
Danish Maritime Authority, draft of IMO MODU code 1989.
ACCOMODATION
130 persons in 63 two-man rooms and four one-man rooms
with full facilities. Ten offices. Six recreation rooms.
